The growth in average broadband speeds in the UK have reached a plateau, a study by broadband.co.uk showed. In the six months from to March 2009 from October 2008, the average broadband speed in the UK grew by almost 20 percent, while in the last six months that rate of growth has slowed to just over 5 percent. In the last four months growth in broadband speeds slumped to just under 0.5 percent, the study revealed. The results were calculated from hundreds of thousands of broadband speed tests taken on the broadband.co.uk site between October 2008 and September 2009 by ordinary broadband users UK wide. The study noted that the only real positive result that stood out is that of Virgin Media, which saw a rise in average speeds of over 16 percent in the last 6 months. Without Virgin Media, the UK average broadband speed may have actually dropped over the period.
