PG: Rs 59.72bn being spent on social sector this year: Neelam Jabbar

The Minister Population Welfare Punjab, Neelam Jabbar Ch. has said that in order to provide health, education, sanitation, safe & clean drinking water and other civic amenities to every citizen of the country we have to control the rapidly growing population, therefore, a comprehensive awareness campaign will be launched in the province.

Hence, every citizen including community leaders, teachers, elected representatives and Ulema should play their due role in this social service. She said that during current fiscal year, Rs. 59.72 billion would be spent on the social sector from developmental program which is the 46% of our ADP, so that to upgrade the socio economic status of the people of the province.

She expressed these views while addressing the members of NGOs, LHVs and LHWs. The Minister said that focus of the provincial government is upon Primary and protective healthcare so that to achieve the millennium development goals (MDGs). She said that at present under five mortality rate present is 94/1000 and it will be reduced 65 by 2011 and 45 till 2015(MDGs Target), new born mortality rate is 54/1000 and it would be reduced upto 40 and 25 by years 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Neelam Jabbar Ch. said that welfare centers would be established at the villages comprising three thousand population villages and skilled birth attendants, LHVs and LHWs would be appointed at these centers because the MMR in LHWs covered area is 147/100,000 live births, compared 300 to 350/100,000 to uncovered areas, therefore, the LHWs, LHVs and the community midwives were being appointed at all the health centers in remote areas. She told that the Population Welfare Department is providing services regarding family welfare purposes through 1497 family welfare centers, 117 mobile service units, 2604 mail mobilizers, 54 birth centers and a large number of LHWs.

She said that in order to achieve the required results of the departmental activities of comprehensive and effective monitoring & evaluation system has been established in the department whereas, to activate the community participation at local level the services of Ulema would be acquired.
