The world's chip giant Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC), will finish moving its Shanghai plant to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, southwest China, at the end of November 2009.
Amid the economic recession, Intel once announced in early 2009 that it would shift its chip-assembly and testing operation in Pudong District, Shanghai City, to Chengdu. It expects to integrate its testing and assembly operation in Shanghai to Chengdu in the following 12 months. As for the 2,500 employees at the Shanghai plant, they are encouraged to go to Chengdu.
The move brought a reinvestment of USD 75 million in Chengdu, driving Intel's total investment in the city to USD 600 million.
Moreover, some related companies also settled in Chengdu thanks to the announcement, forming a complete industrial chain.
The Chengdu plant has realized local procurement and the company expects to lure more companies in the downstream segment, noted an executive for Intel China.
