RTENL selects Harris's Intraplex NetXpress multiplexer solution

Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, has provided an Intraplex NetXpress multiplexer solution to Irish national broadcaster RTE Transmission Network to support a digital upgrade of its radio distribution network.

Local Irish dealer Broadcast Video Services (BVS) has worked with Harris to provide the 72 NetXpress multiplexers to RTE Transmission Network (RTENL). The Harris multiplexer install occurred within the context of a digital upgrade of RTENL's entire contribution and distribution networks.

The upgraded contribution network connects all RTE studios from around Ireland into the RTE headquarters in Dublin. The upgraded distribution network is built in a dual-ring architecture, providing main and standby feeds from studios for RTE Radio 1, 2FM, Radio RnaG, Lyric FM and Today FM radio services to the main transmitter sites in the country.

Harris and BVS have worked together to provide all pre-installation configuration services, staff training, remote network monitoring during the installation, project management and front-line support. Disaster recovery provision was set up from regional studios.

Eamonn Reid, head of projects for RTENL, said: "As this is a significant project for RTENL, we wanted to work with a manufacturer that could not only supply the equipment, but also support us for the lifetime of the system infrastructure. Since this is a major upgrade to our radio programme network, we must be able to trust that the solution will continue to meet our needs for many years. The Intraplex NetXpress multiplexers have performed well and met all of our requirements, including flexibility, reliability and manageability."
