Teijin Pharma Limited: Exclusive European Sublicensing Agreement Signed for Teijin-developed TMX-67 Gout Treatment

Teijin Pharma announced today the signing of an exclusive sublicense agreement for TMX-67 (febuxostat) between Ipsen of France, the European TMX-67 licensee, and the Menarini Group of Italy. Discovered and developed by Teijin Pharma, TMX-67 is a novel drug for the treatment of hyperuricemia in patients with gout, and is a strategic product for the expansion of the company's overseas businesses.

Under the terms of the sublicense agreement, Menarini will handle the sales of TMX-67 in Europe including Russia under the brand name Adenuric(r) after its commercial launch, targeted at early 2010. Teijin Pharma will supply the product at an agreed price.

In July 2003, Teijin Pharma signed an exclusive license agreement with Ipsen regarding the development and marketing of TMX-67 in Europe. Further to obtaining the EMEA approval in April 2008, Ipsen has been seeking the ideal partner for marketing the product. With its significant pan-European presence, Menarini ranks fourth largest pharmaceutical team for delivering medical information to physicians. Menarini is Italy's largest pharmaceutical company, and has expertise in successfully developing, registering and delivering medical information for drug products in a broad range of therapeutic areas.

With strong global potential, TMX-67 is one of Teijin Pharma's promising products. Approval was obtained by Teijin Pharma's respective licensees, in the U.S. by Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America in February 2009, and in Korea by SK Chemicals in June 2009. Sales are already underway in the United States. In addition, Teijin Pharma signed an exclusive distributorship agreement with its licensee for the Taiwan market in May this year, and is preparing to resubmit a New Drug Application (NDA) in Japan. Teijin Pharma will continue to pursue collaborative efforts to broaden TMX-67's global availability.

Gout, a chronic disease marked by gouty arthritis associated with severe pain, is mainly treated with medication that inhibits xanthine oxidase, an enzyme directly related to the production of uric acid. The current leading medication, allopurinol, was developed nearly 40 years ago, so a new drug that provides more options for the treatment of gout and hyperuricaemia has long been sought.

TMX-67, developed by Teijin Pharma after intensive research, is an oral, once-daily, highly potent, non-purine drug that selectively inhibits xanthine oxidase. A novel drug with a structure completely different from that of allopurinol, TMX-67 lowers the level of uric acid in the blood of hyperuricemic patients suffering from gout.
