ADTRAN Boosts Industry-Leading Mobile Backhaul Portfolio Expansion of Total Access 5000 Ethernet and Pseudowire Capabilities Enables Operators to Overcome Major Barriers to Unleashing Backhaul Capacity
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Oct 20, 2009 -- ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading supplier of mobile backhaul solutions, today announced the expansion of its mobile backhaul portfolio with the addition of Fiber Ethernet Access and Pseudowire (PWE3) gateway capabilities. ADTRAN's widely deployed Total Access 5000 and OPTI-6100 access solutions now support a comprehensive group of advanced access options tailored for mobile backhaul applications including GPON, Fiber Ethernet Access, multi-pair bonded DSL, and legacy TDM solutions. The addition of Fiber Ethernet Access and PWE3 further enhances ADTRAN's portfolio, giving operators a range of solutions that is perfectly tailored to enable the circuit-to-packet transition required for significant gains in backhaul capacity and network efficiency.
"Currently there are about 240,000 cell sites in North America, with about 70 percent today fed by multiple T1s, and the vast majority of these T1s use ADTRAN HDSL equipment," stated Michael Howard, principal analyst, Infonetics Research. "The global mobile broadband phenomenon is causing unprecedented growth in cell-site bandwidth needs, forcing providers and operators to deploy fiber to cell sites as quickly as possible. The reality is that cell sites cannot be fiberized quickly enough, which means that cell site backhaul products must be flexible in offering a mix of TDM and Ethernet as well as options for copper and fiber uplinks. Vendors such as ADTRAN are cognizant of these requirements and have built product families to meet these needs."
"As mobile operators continue transitioning toward higher-bandwidth mobile broadband technologies like Wi-MAX and LTE, advanced access options are critical to provide additional capacity and quality of service. However, just as critical is ensuring that support for existing networks is not sacrificed," said Jay Wilson, senior vice president and general manager, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. "ADTRAN has a comprehensive suite of carrier-proven mobile backhaul solutions with plans for continued innovation on the horizon. Our goal is to continue to build market leadership by offering the most flexible portfolio of mobile backhaul solutions on the market."
ADTRAN offers one of the industry's most comprehensive mobile backhaul portfolios anchored by the OPTI-6100 high-density, multi-service, optical access platform and the Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform. These solutions are designed to provide optimal performance, while reducing capex and ongoing operational expenses. The Total Access 5000 is unique in its ability to provide a common platform for a mix of residential broadband, business Ethernet and mobile backhaul services over both optical and copper access technologies.
The OPTI-6100 is designed to meet small and large customer bandwidth needs and offers the industry's most flexible deployment options for optical ring-based access networks. This allows service providers to benefit from streamlined operational requirements with a single platform acting as a centralized traffic management, local switching, and service assurance platform.
ADTRAN's Mobile Backhaul portfolio also boasts a wide range of purpose-built network termination equipment (NTE), supporting native Ethernet and TDM pseudowire capabilities. Service providers can simplify operations and reduce time to market through common management, provisioning and troubleshooting - regardless of the physical media. The flexibility of these platforms, which are already deployed globally in support of these advanced access networks, enables carriers to maximize the number of different applications supported by single platforms, creating a fully integrated access infrastructure.

Akamai Helps Retailers Reach in-Market Consumers and Drive Transactions with Ease and Efficiency Using predictive modeling based on shopping data, Akamai helps its customers reach in-market online consumers with display advertising in real time and at scale
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct 20, 2009 -- Akamai eliminates need to implement tracking pixels, enabling retailers to quickly launch campaigns with limited effort on the part of IT departments
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering video, advertising, dynamic transactions, and enterprise applications online, today announced the availability of ADS predictive segments, part of Akamai's Advertising Decision Solutions (ADS) line, a unique solution that provides multi-channel retailers, product manufacturers, travel, and telecommunication websites with a way to drive incremental transactionsonline.
ADS predictive segments are based on sophisticated predictive analytics and modeling of data from the industry's only online consumer shopping data cooperative. Retailers can access the power of the Akamai data cooperative by running online ad campaigns on acerno, the Akamai add network(TM), in order to reach in-market online shoppers with display advertising in real time and at scale. The benefit for retailers is a quantifiable improvement in reaching the right consumers and driving transactions. For an Internet Retailer 100 company, for example, Akamai's predictive segments solution was able to drive a 2.5 percent incremental increase in online sales on average per month.
In addition, by eliminating the requirement to implement tracking pixels, ADS predictive segments enable retailers to launch campaigns quickly, with limited effort required from their IT departments. Faster 'time-to-live' means retailers don't have to miss time-sensitive campaign opportunities. Plus, the more effective system enables larger and higher performing campaigns.
"How a consumer shops is the best predictor of what they are in-market for right now. This has been proven true for many years in the offline world, and is now proven true online as well," said Mike Afergan, Akamai's CTO and senior vice president of Advertising Decision Solutions.
"Akamai leverages comprehensive and anonymous shopping data in order to help our clients advertise their products on the acerno add network(TM) to consumers who are in-market for what they sell. As a result, Akamai can drive significant volume for our customers, in some cases over 10 percent of online sales, in effect becoming a new sales channel. Now, with the introduction of ADS predictive segments, available with or without pixels, we are creating an even faster way for retailers to drive incremental sales. And, because everything is priced on a cost-per-action (CPA) basis, advertisers only pay when a transaction occurs, which ensures that the program's economics are in line with their financial objectives."
Akamai's unique shopping data cooperative
The Akamai cooperative provides a unique solution to the complex problem of reaching in-market, online consumers. Hundreds of multi-channel retail, travel, telecommunications and product manufacturer websites across nearly every product category contribute fully anonymous data about how consumers shop on their sites to the Akamai data cooperative. This cooperative contains data from approximately 140 million online shoppers in the United States and represents an estimated over $15 Billion worth of consumer spending for the coming fourth quarter of this year. The predictive analytics utilized by Akamai help identify which users are currently in-market for an advertiser's products online.
In addition, the cooperative's value stems from the fact that its data and predictive models are continuously updated every day. Akamai data shows that there are 30 million shoppers typically in-market at any given time. This data also reveals that every three weeks, roughly 80 percent, or 24 million new users, will come into market, replacing consumers that have exited the market. This real-time insight is critical to optimizing online marketing. Akamai continuously analyzes thousands of shopping behavioral variables in order to understand when data across a variety of product categories becomes relevant. As an example, shopping data around varied items such as clothing, footwear, or even music can help locate in-market buyers of auto parts and accessories.
As one of the earliest members of the Akamai data cooperative, JC Whitney, a leader in the automotive aftermarket providing customers with the widest selection of parts and accessories, is leveraging ADS predictive segments, without pixels, to more effectively and quickly predict online buying patterns.
"Akamai ADS predictive segments is an extremely valuable solution for us to help drive transactions," said Geoffrey Robertson, General Manager & Vice President, eCommerce at JC Whitney. "It is beneficial for us on a number of fronts. First, Akamai is helping us find customers that have never visited our site, by looking for patterns of customers that may have a high interest in our product -- customers that we deem to be in- market. Using their predictive modeling, they are able to display tailored ads that pique consumer interest and drive consumers to our site.
And, since it is a 'pay for performance' structure, we are only paying for the customers that come to our site and make a purchase. Second, by providing a pixel-free technical solution, we expect to achieve great efficiency to launching advertising campaigns. Akamai creates a very powerful way for finding people, and doing it in an economical fashion."
Akamai's ADS predictive segments build on the company's unique and trusted position in the online industry. Akamai is a member of the National Advertising Initiative (NAI), a cooperative of online marketing and analytics companies committed to establishing responsible business and data management practices and standards. As a result, Akamai is committed to consumer choice and notice, and protects the privacy of shoppers by using only anonymous and non-personally identifiable information.

Olympic Hopefuls Go Wireless With Aruba Networks Sport England and Leisure Connection Choose Aruba for Historic Bisham Abbey's Leisure Centre, Training Facility and 13th Century Manor House
SUNNYVALE, CA, Oct 20, 2009 -- Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), a global leader in 802.11n wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that Sport England's National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey has deployed an Aruba wireless network to deliver wireless connectivity to organizations based at Bisham Abbey. The network also provides a hotspot service available to members of the leisure centre, and top athletes who train at the centre. The wireless network is operated by Leisure Connection, and was installed by Aruba partner Converge Networks.
"The Bisham Abbey site consists of a wide variety of buildings, including a manor house dating back to 1260, and we needed a solution that would be flexible and reliable no matter where it was installed," said Jeremy Smith, IT Manager at Leisure Connection. "We act as a service provider to the different organizations on the campus, and consequently needed a solution that would be flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of applications, reliable for the users, and most importantly, would work first time. Aruba's solution does exactly that."
Leisure Connection is the leading outsourced facility management company for local authorities in the UK, and operates The National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey on behalf of Sport England. A number of national sports organizations are headquartered at the site and use the wireless network as part of the managed service. Athletes, visiting sports teams and members of the public also use the wireless network, which extends across the campus from the modern leisure facility to a manor house once widely visited by the kings and queens of England.
"It was clear to us that flexibility and reliability were paramount," continued Smith. "A refurbishment and partial rebuild of the leisure centre allowed us to put in place a modern wired - wireless infrastructure. We don't have that luxury in the manor house, so there we have deployed Aruba's mesh wireless. It uses the same access points that we use elsewhere, is managed in exactly the same way, but did not require us to run cabling through a listed ancient monument."
To deliver a best-in-class wireless experience, Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) technology automates site surveys and uses infrastructure-based controls to optimize the performance of Wi-Fi clients in real-time. Aruba's secure enterprise mesh technology acts as an extension to an existing network, and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor environments that are difficult to wire. Using one common infrastructure for both indoor and outdoor applications eliminates the need for two separately managed systems.
"Modern wireless networks are simple to implement, very secure, and easy to manage," said Bob Vickers, sales director of Aruba UK and Ireland.
"Although installations can vary greatly, automatic management of the ever-changing RF environment and centralized management make set-up and operation easy. Leisure Connection's use of Aruba in both a modern leisure centre and a thirteenth century manor house on the same campus demonstrates the versatility of Aruba's solution."
