DemandTec Inc (Nasdaq:DMAN), a provider of on-demand optimisation solutions for retailers and consumer products manufacturers, announced today the launch of the 4th Annual DemandTec Retail Challenge, part of its Corporate Citizenship initiative.
The challenge lasts two weeks and is an online competition for high school seniors, with 13 high schools and around 120 students taking part, which simulates the real-life responsibilities of retail marketers and merchandisers.
The winning teams will have the opportunity to ring the NASDAQ OMX Stock Market closing bell on 11 January 2010 in New York City and scholarships for college education expenses will also be awarded to the winners.
The DemandTec Retail Challenge will present the teams of students with common retail business challenges including ordering products, managing inventory and pricing assortments. They will be asked to implement basic category management principles using their business instincts and mathematics skills. The teams will be given relevant data and apply analytic techniques such as statistical modelling. They will then be asked to develop and present their merchandising recommendations to a judging panel of retail experts.
This year's competition is co-sponsored by DemandTec customers BI-LO, Giant Eagle, Safeway and Target as part of a community outreach programme designed to encourage awareness of the practical applications of mathematics in a business environment.
Scholarship money of over USD50,000 has been awarded since the DemandTec Retail Challenge was started in 2005.
