Green Dot Deploys Video Delivery Solutions from Harmonic

Harmonic Inc. announced that Green Dot, a provider of telecommunication solutions in Trinidad and Tobago, has deployed Harmonic's video delivery solutions to expand its terrestrial (DVB-T) television service.

Installed in St. James, Trinidad, the Harmonic IP-based headend system provides compression and stream processing for more than 80 MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) Green Dot TV channels delivered to tens of thousands of subscribers across the islands.

Green Dot was previously a customer of Scopus Video Networks, a video technology company in the contribution and distribution market acquired by Harmonic in March 2009.

"Harmonic provided us with the highest quality solution for our growing Green Dot TV broadcast offering," said Ketan Patel, CEO at Green Dot. "The Harmonic system was extremely simple to deploy and offers performance and stability, benefits which were critical to our introduction of additional TV channels and in preparation for a future rollout of high definition video services."

The Green Dot service is sent to a mountaintop tower via IP microwave link, and in turn transmitted throughout Trinidad and Tobago via DVB-T signal. Harmonic's Electra 5400 standard definition (SD) AVC encoders and ProStream 1000 stream processing platform with integrated DiviTrackIP statistical multiplexing technology deliver high quality variable bit-rate (VBR) services while optimizing bandwidth efficiency. Harmonic's ProView 2900 integrated receiver/decoders (IRDs) are used by Green Dot for content reception, and Harmonic's NMX Digital Service Manager provides Green Dot with a set of tools for configuring, monitoring and managing the full lineup of compressed digital video and audio services.
