Earnings Gainers Roundup: PEET, CQB, RSYS, UIS

Peet's Coffee & Tea (PEET) grew its earnings by 27% year over year, to 19 cents per share in the third quarter. The company raised its 2009 earnings guidance above the high end of the prior range, and introduced 2010 guidance for earnings growth of between 20 and 25 percent. Investors cheered the report, sending Peet's shares nearly 14% higher early Wednesday.

Chiquita Brands International (CQB) posted a profit of 11 cents per share for the quarter, which compares to a 16 cent loss in the same quarter last year. Positive progress in the company's new salad offerings helped drive the results. Looking ahead, the company predicted its full 2009 year will be a significant improvement over 2008, with the new salads segment expected to have an operating margin of between 7 and 8 percent. Chiquita shares gained more than 12 and a half percent.

Communications technology company RadiSys (RSYS) announced a third quarter loss of 4 cents per share, which compares to 2 cents in the same quarter last year, hurt by a nearly 30% plunge in revenue year over year. But revenue was in line with the company's projections, and cash flow, gross margins, and earnings were all better than expected. RadiSys projected fourth quarter earnings in a range of a 7 cent loss to earnings of a penny per share. RadiSys shares were trading more than 10 and a half percent higher.

And shares of Unisys (UIS) advanced nearly 11%, after reporting third quarter earnings of a dollar 48, up from a 96 cent loss in the same quarter last year as the company made progress on its turnaround program. Revenue was down 12% year over year, but the company turned cash flow positive for the year during the third quarter.
