Bell Micro: Bell Micro urges partners to embrace opportunities in Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

The Security division of Bell Micro, a specialist value added distributor of high-tech products, solutions and services, has today announced that recent research findings show that a significant proportion (35%) of UK organisations still remain unable to monitor the copying and movement of data on the network. This startling admission uncovers a substantial opportunity for the channel to work with customers by urgently re-evaluating network security protocols, so Bell Micro is now embarking on a series of educational events, hosted in partnership with key vendors, to promote the DLP solutions that are readily available.

According to the Ponemon Institute the average cost of each record compromised in a data breach in the UK in 2007 was GBP47, and for those companies who reported a breach the total costs could average GBP1.4 million, but often climbed to much higher levels. Gartner not only believes that 70% of threats now come from inside the organisation but thatthe global DLP market will be worth more than GBP1.5B in revenue by 2012. This view is also echoed by vendors such as IBM, Symantec and Websense Security Labs. In particular, Symantec's DLP business unit conservatively estimates the global market is growing by 60% year on year, and research by Websense, aleader in the field according to both Gartner and Forrester, points to growing evidence to suggest that data stealing attacks are on the rise.

"DLP is about ensuring the safety of data. It is not an insurance sale," said Ed Callacher, Divisional Director at Bell Micro. "We see growing interest in this area asan opportunity to promote this tool, beyond traditional security VARs, to those that understand the value of data and who can address both the storage and security implications behind growth in data volumes. DLP represents an enormous opportunity for resellers to encourage customers to understand exposure to risk through data loss, and develop and enforce policies to mitigate that risk, whilst also measuring its effectiveness.

Vendors are staking their reputations on DLP, and it's a safe bet. Bell Micro is already seeing in excess of 80% risk reduction for customers within weeks of implementing such DLP strategies," Callacher continued. "As a company, we are beginning to exert considerable strength in the embryonic UK DLP market. Our vendor relationships and broad experience in storage makes us the natural partner for any reseller looking to support customers by developing a solution that will ensure that valuable, business critical, data is not lost."

Bell Micro works with leading vendors in the DLP space, including Websense, Symantec, IBM, HP and Virtuity, bringing together the storage and search technologies resellers need to sell and manage security in the mix by creating a constant and unified strategy for data threat prevention.
