Brazilian airline GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA (BOVESPA:GOLL4) (NYSE:GOL) announced on Thursday that it is implementing a new communications and operational management system with global coverage based on the Iridium satellite network.
The technology allows for the exchange of information in real time through voice and text message and is linked to GOL's ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System). It can also be used as an operational management tool.
According to GOL, benefits of the ACARSvia Iridium system include: strengthening reliability and operational safety; providing better control of aircraft performance during flights; and reducing costs through decreasing aircraft weight and streamlining the daily management of the air network.
The Iridium satellite network reportedly functions over 100% of the globe, ensuring that reliable and accurate communications can take place between all of the different parties that make up the air traffic system.
