Banks trim their branches

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority has issued its latest data on the branch networks of the nation's banking sector. The figures show that main players ANZ Banking, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank have all closed branches during 2008-09, although at a low rate. Additional sites were unveiled by smaller and regional competitors such as Bendigo & Adelaide Bank and Rural Bank. Including building societies, there are now 6,677 outlets in total, up 52 since mid-2008.
