The FactPoint Group Releases Private Cloud Computing ROI Study

A white paper published by The FactPoint Group, a Silicon Valley-based research and consulting firm, quantifies significant cost and efficiency gains at Corus Automotive Engineering Group (AEG), an engineering company using a private cloud solution powered by Univa UD and Intel technologies, the company reported.

Corus is part of Tata Steel, a worldwide steel producer.

The solution, based on the Intel Xeon Processor 5500 series and Univa private cloud software running technical computing applications, has delivered measurable benefits in under three months. According to the report, these include an 80 percent reduction in systems administration time, cost savings exceeding $115,000 and a 200 percent increase in application performance.

"We couldn't be happier with the project results to date," said Mike Twelves, IT Systems Manager at Corus AEG. "With the Univa private cloud we are moving complexity out of the system and at the same time improving efficiency across application processing, license utilization and system admin workflow. The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series should absolutely fly for our massively parallel processing applications, upping the performance of the system even further."

In addition to documenting gains achieved in the first three months, the report also quantifies expected efficiency gains from the second half of the project, including an anticipated 40 percent reduction in power consumption and 82 percent reduction in hardware footprint.
