NEC Corporation Joins GlobalPlatform

GlobalPlatform announced today that NEC Corporation has joined its membership and will participate in the organization's Mobile Task Force activities. NEC is a leading provider of IT/network solutions.

Joining GlobalPlatform, the international specification body for smart card infrastructure, as an Observer Member, NEC will play an active role in the organization's Mobile Task Force. Working in collaboration with other industry standardization bodies, this group brings together more than 45 GlobalPlatform member companies to actively contribute to the development of mobile telecommunications standards worldwide.

In addition to participating in the Mobile Task Force, NEC will also contribute to GlobalPlatform's Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is a forum for members to engage directly with GlobalPlatform's Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and the Technical and Executive Directors on priority issues such as industry trends, strategy, and the technical priorities and activities that will shape the organization.

Kevin Gillick, Executive Director of GlobalPlatform, comments: "With its experience in developing credible, large-scale telecommunication solutions, and its technical expertise in IT and networks, particularly in the fields of computer, networking and electron devices, NEC is a welcomed addition to GlobalPlatform. Our ongoing success is dependent on the involvement of members and we look forward to NEC's participation."

"Our decision to join GlobalPlatform was based on our strong support of its open technology and keen interest in staying at the forefront of new developments in the specifications that will be utilized in near field communication (NFC) enabled technology," says Naoya Henmi, General Manager of the Marketing Division at NEC Corporation. "NEC has proven experience in delivering contactless IC business in Japan and in order to further our work in this area, we identified the benefit gains from contributing and being part of GlobalPlatform's body of work."
