'Spain adds 65,843 broadband lines in September'

Spain added 58,041 mobile lines in September, bringing the total number to 52.28 million, up by 4.3 percent over the same month of 2008, according to the monthly report by Spanish regulator CMT. Over the last three months, Movistar won 49.09 percent of the total new additions, MVNOs 36.32 percent, Yoigo 15.95 percent and Orange won 8.13 percent, while Vodafone lost 9.68 percent in the period. Mobile penetration reached 113.3 lines per 100 inhabitants, versus 109.2 in September 2008. The M2M sector went up by 24.3 percent over the same period last year, to over 1.72 million lines. The growth of the M2M sector brings the total number of mobile lines to over 54.01 million. Some 376,811 mobile phone numbers were ported in September, up by 20.9 percent versus the same period last year. Yoigo, the MVNOs and Orange saw a positive balance in portability, while Vodafone and Movistar registered a negative balance. Yoigo won 24,599 users, the MVNOs added 9,389 users and Orange won 3,128 ported customers. Spanish operators added a record 65,843 broadband users in September, reaching a total base of 9.52 million lines, up by 8.1 percent year-on-year and a penetration of over 20.6 lines per 100 inhabitants. The number of DSL lines rose by 57,325 connections or by 8.9 percent over the same period of 2008, reaching a total of 7.69 million lines at the end of September. Some 8,518 cable modem lines were added in the month, reaching a total of 1.83 million lines. The overall number of fixed lines dropped by 4,835, to 19.84 million lines at the end of September. Fixed penetration reached 43 lines per 100 inhabitants, versus 44.2 in the year-earlier month. Over 124,727 fixed numbers were ported in September, up by 59.4 percent versus 78,247 fixed numbers ported in September 2008.
