China Unicom, Taiwan Mobile Said to Build NTD1bn Cable

Mainland China-based telecoms operator China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU) plans to construct a benthal communications cable in cooperation with its peer Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd. (TPE: 3045) to connect the two regions, according to insiders.
Between the mainland's Fujian Province and Taipei's Tamshui Town, the cable is expected to involve a total investment of NTD 1 billion. China Mobile Chairman Chang Xiaobing and Taiwan Mobile Harvey Chang are said to have talked about the project at the 2009 Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong on November 17.
The two companies are also brewing the construction of two other communications cables between Shanghai and Tamshui as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan's Fangshan Town, upon other reports.
In addition, the mainland-based China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (SEHK: 0728 and NYSE: CHA) and Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (TPE: 2412) are reportedly set to invest about CNY 500 million to jointly build an optical cable from the mainland's Xiamen City to the Kinmen Island.
