Airlines December Traffic: US Airways, AirTran

US Airways (LCC) said today its December mainline revenue passenger miles fell 3.6 percent as compared to last year, to 4.5 billion. Revenue passenger miles is a key figure for measuring airline traffic, and measures one passenger being flown one mile.
Capacity was 5.7 billion available seat miles, down 2.4 percent as compared to last year.
Passenger load factor, or percentage of seats filled, was down one percent to 79.3 percent, the airline said.
And AirTran Airway, a unit of AirTrain Holdings (AAI) said its December revenue passenger miles were up 5.3 percent, to more than 1.5 billion.
Its December capacity was up 8.2 percent to 1.98 billion available seat miles. Load factor was down about 2 points to 77.7 percent.
