January 6, 2010 (FinancialWire) -- Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM), the industry leader in innovative analog and mixed-signal silicon solutions, and Celeno Communications, a provider of semiconductors for multimedia Wi-Fi home networking applications, announced their collaboration to provide whole-home wireless HD solutions.
The companies are now offering a joint reference design that can be embedded into HDTVs, gaming consoles, digital video recorders, laptops, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, and home gateways. This reference design is based on the Maxim(R) MG3500 H.264 encoder/decoder, the MAX2828 802.11 transceiver, and the Celeno CL1300 Wi-Fi implicit beamforming MIMO system-on-chip. The solution enables wireless, whole-home HDMI distribution to single or multiple flat-panel TVs.
Manufacturers will be able to leverage the reference design to build devices that distribute full-HD content wirelessly to remote HDTV displays. For example, TVs can be placed anywhere in the home and located away from the A/V cabinet or the set-top box. Consumers can share content from PCs and DVRs on a big screen TV without cables, or play gaming consoles in different bedrooms.
The companies offer two solution variants: embedded TV modules for integration into TVs, and HDMI adaptor modules for standalone aftermarket products.
The solutions enjoy the following advantages:
1. The combination of real-time, perceived lossless, H.264 video compression with transmit beamforming Wi-Fi technology that provides whole-home wireless coverage for full-HD video, regardless of signal interference or dead zones.
2. Standard HDMI interfaces with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP revision 2.0).
3. Wi-Fi and H.264 video decoding are technologies included in a growing number of connected TV models. Re-using the technology for wireless HDMI streaming can effectively reduce the overall bill of materials.
4. Standards-based WLAN home networking technology for a single, converged home network to share HD video content between a variety of CE, gaming, computing, networking, and A/V devices.
