Mr. Nelson was asked by the FAA inspector Lance Knuckles, "Why did you start with a helicopter?" Steve stated, "It was the hardest one to do and I figured if I do the hardest first the rest will be easy". Some history on his newly patented simulator innovation will change how simulators of the future will be looked at. S.O.S. has patented what is known as a Surround Screen Simulator with the largest wrap around screen being (220 X 85) degrees inside an 18-20 foot cargo trailer with direct projection. This unit has a separated instructors station, which will be described below. This concept can also be replicated in a stationary office environment. These simulators are designed by and built by Engineers that are pilots. Mr. Nelson is not only a FAA commercial instrument pilot, he is a certified flight instructor, (CFI, CFII, AGI) as well as a FCC licensed Engineer. This simulator immerses the pilot IN the environment. You are NOT looking into a single or multi flat screen CRT. There are no fake buttons or imitation inputs.
All functions work which is including "nearest airports" and the importing of "waypoints or and flight plans". Mr. Nelson's simulator uses a real Garmin GPS unit. The cockpit represented is measured from an actual aircraft, all cockpits will be exactly as the aircraft that they are being designed to replicate. Included in this simulator is IFR training, networking multiple S.O.S. simulators together. This includes worldwide not just in the same building, Because of S.O.S.'s unique patented optical system you can take advantage of the ability to do slope landings, tail in hover, nose in hover, and use of real night vision goggles. In the patented imaging of this simulator there is No distortion and there are NO hot spots. There is no 'stair-stepping' of the horizon, even with rapid maneuvers. Along with this immersive technology also comes the patented data feedback with vibrations and sound. The instructors station is comprised of 6 separate screens of viewing to monitor all phases of pilot training, three of which are for "out the window" view, one screen is the instructors screen with mapping and instructor controls, one screen for viewing the trainee, one screen to duplicate instrument panel inside the aircraft. FAA certification was performed on X-PLANE platform Version 8.64 and above. S.O.S. offers sales as well as lease options and rentals, S.O.S.will even consider mobile scheduling of their mobile units.
