Diabetes is a chronic condition, which can in most cases be managed but not completely cured. As such, the central issue both for sufferers and the health system is to find sustainable (and cost-effective) ways to manage the disease into the long term.

The NHS spends 5% of its budget - close to £10million a day - treating people with diabetes. In Bolton 29 people are newly diagnosed with diabetes each week and designers came up with a way to help them talk about their condition with doctors and to manage their condition effectively.

Having advertised the project in GP surgeries in the area, the team found a group of 20 willing participants, all diabetes sufferers and all ready to share their experiences of living with the condition.
