TOKYO, Nov 25, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Leading mobile handset producer Nokia Corp. on Tuesday announced plans to sharply curtail its Japanese R&D operations.
Of the 300 employees at its local subsidiary, the Finnish company will shed the 220 workers involved in handset development. It had already stopped taking orders from NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) and other domestic carriers at the end of last year.
Nokia will continue to market its Vertu brand of high-end phones in Japan . Sales staff for handsets and communications infrastructure will remain as well.
Nokia has the largest share of the global cell phone market, but rival products such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone have gained the edge in the smart-phone segment. Seeing the need to pare its lineup from the 50 models offered currently, the firm decided to effectively end Japanese R&D operations as part of that effort.

Nov 25, 2009 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) --
Mobile communication company Nokia (NYSE:NOK) said on Tuesday that it will be reducing its R&D activities in Japan.
This is reportedly a part of Nokia's global efforts to align its research and development (R&D) operations to be in line with its focused portfolio of future products.
Nokia also plans to reduce some of its R&D activities in Finland and Denmark.
This reduction of activities is expected to impact approximately 220 employees in Japan. The total number would represent slightly more than 1% of Nokia's R&D personnel globally.
Nokia said that it will continue its significant sourcing activities in Japan.
The Japanese operation of Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia's network infrastructure business, is not affected by this announcement and continues uninterrupted.
Also, Vertu, Nokia's exclusive line of handcrafted mobile phones for the luxury market, will also continue operations in Japan unaffected by today's announcement.
