Cumene Production and Manufacturing Information
The original process to manufacture cumene was propyl alkylation of benzene using sulphuric acid as the catalyst. However, this process suffered from complicated neutralisation and recycle steps as well as corrosion problems.
Propylene Oxide (PO) Production and Manufacturing Process
Propylene oxide (PO) is made traditionally by chlorohydrin or epoxidation routes. In the older chlorohydrin process, propylene and chlorine react in the presence of water to form propylene chlorohydrin, which is further reacted with sodium or calcium hydroxide to obtain PO.

Cumene is the main feedstock for phenol/acetone production and demand is driven by market growth for the derivatives of phenol and acetone such as bis-phenol A, phenolic resins and caprolactam.
Cumene Uses and Market Data
Around 98% of cumene is used to produce phenol and its co-product acetone. However, the outlook for cumene is largely dependent on the performance of phenol’s derivatives which have resulted in healthy growth rates for cumene.
