I am now adamant in wearing safety goggles after a friend of mine suffered an injury due to negligence when working with a power tool. I wondered why do people not want to wear safety equipment? Is it general laziness, the fear of looking unfashionable or impracticality?

Some of it does more harm than good in my opinion. Safety goggles make sense if you're welding, but otherwise they're not very good for peripheral vision, particularly on a busy site. Same with ear defenders - could stop you from hearing a vehicle reversing for example.
