Finisar's Medusa Labs Demonstrates 1.5 Million Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS) in a
AUSTIN, TX and SUNNYVALE, CA, Nov 18, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) --
Finisar Corporation (NASDAQ: FNSR) has partnered with Emulex and Third I/O Inc. in an industry-first technology demonstration of 1.5 million IOPS in a single server benchmark test at Supercomputing 2008. Powered by Finisar's new Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite 3.0, this demonstration is unique as it is the first time a single server has confirmed I/O performance as fast as 1.5 million IOPS to a Fibre Channel storage network. The Finisar, Emulex, and Third I/O network will be operating in Finisar's booth #2315 at Supercomputing 2008.
High IOP generation tools provide network equipment vendors and data center administrators with an extremely cost-effective means of stressing their systems to find the limits of performance without having to spend big dollars on computing equipment. This demonstration is the industry's first to achieve 1.5 million IOPS on a single server, representing the lowest cost, highest performance solution available today. Previous attempts at stress testing used tools that did not allow for write/read/compare data integrity testing at 1.5 million IOPS. Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite is uniquely capable of generating over 1.5 million IOPS while at the same time checking the data for integrity.
With today's new 3.0 release of Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite, Finisar is introducing a next-generation test tool suite that provides complete I/O generation, data and signal integrity verification, stress testing, performance benchmarking, and remote management capabilities. These critical features allow test and validation engineers to develop higher-quality products in a shorter time frame, for faster time to market. The test tool suite is ideal for companies developing servers, switches, Host Bus Adapters (HBA), and other storage equipment.
"Finisar's Medusa Labs benchmark demonstrates a technology breakthrough in the IOPS achieved on a single server and it highlights the critical I/O performance and features Emulex's LightPulse(R) 8Gb/s Host Bus Adapters provide, such as support for the Message-Signaled Interrupts eXtended (MSI-X) standard," said Taufik Ma, vice president of product marketing at Emulex Corporation. "We have used Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite in the validation and optimization of the performance of our products for several years and thoroughly trust their expertise."
About MLTT 3.0
Key features of the new release include cross-platform remote management through a single GUI and scalability to accommodate large testing facilities. The enhanced GUI is designed around SQA workflow and enables the creation of full test plans with complete test coverage across multiple remote testing systems based on Windows, Linux, or Solaris. As a consequence, performance testing and benchmarking no longer require individual system management, making it possible for a single technician to initiate tests across multiple systems from a centralized management location.
The advanced I/O engine is optimized for the highest possible application bandwidth and IOPS performance. New graphical test scripting manages extensive test cases within a single test plan and new benchmarking options support full control of read/write and sequential/random traffic ratios.
"Finisar is committed to providing its customers with the best performance testing, verification, and benchmarking capabilities possible with an application. Our approach to testing with software allows engineers to use common system platforms to validate designs based on the latest protocols and technologies, including emerging protocols such as FCoE," said Paul Hansen, vice president of Network Tools marketing at Finisar Corporation. "With this new release, we focused on enhancing our current I/O engine and improving ease-of-use to assist developers in building more robust products with faster time to market."
Medusa Labs Test Tool Suite 3.0 is available now and operates with Finisar's industry-standard Xgig(R) monitoring and analysis platform to provide the most comprehensive testing solution on the market. Emulex FCoE CNAs Compatible With IBM System x(tm) Servers - Zibb.com
COSTA MESA, Calif., Nov 17, 2008 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --
Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) today announced that its LightPulse(r) LP21000 family of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) have been tested and found to be compatible for use with IBM Systems x3650(7979), x3655(7943) and x3755(7163) series servers. Emulex CNAs enable the consolidation of server I/O, allowing IBM customers to reduce the number of network interface cards and cables used by servers by as much as 50 percent, which in turn helps lower power and cooling costs.
"With the largest installed base of Fibre Channel HBAs in IBM SANs worldwide, it is essential that Emulex's family of LightPulse FCoE CNAs are compatible with IBM servers, so that customers can make a seamless transition to the next-generation data center," said Taufik Ma, vice president of product marketing, Emulex Corporation. "The ability to reduce data center complexity, while providing the same level of reliability, performance and manageability as Emulex's Fibre Channel HBAs, makes extending SAN connectivity to other parts of the data center using FCoE technology a prudent approach to data center consolidation and convergence."
The Emulex LP21000 family of CNAs enables customers to further consolidate their data centers by converging Fibre Channel and networking traffic over a 10Gb/s Enhanced Ethernet network, resulting in more streamlined IT operations and higher staff productivity. Emulex FCoE CNAs leverage field-proven Fibre Channel SAN technology, allowing customers to extend their existing investments in infrastructure, management, training and processes. Emulex CNAs also leverage a common driver model and the familiar Emulex HBAnyware(r) management suite.
Emulex CNAs also support Emulex's Virtual HBA technology with industry-standard N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) support, allowing customers to "virtualize" SAN connections so that each virtual machine has independent access to its own protected storage. With Emulex NPIV-enabled FCoE CNAs, customers have the ability to track and chargeback storage utilization at the virtual machine level using Emulex's HBAnyware management suite. For more information on Emulex LightPulse CNAs, visit: http://www.emulex.com/products/fcoe/index.jsp.

Third I/O Breaks One Million IOPS to Achieve Major Storage Performance Milestone - Zibb.com
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov 5, 2008 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --
Third I/O Incorporated today announced the results of a collaborative benchmark with AMD and Emulex Corporations, which achieved a sustained data rate of over 1.1 million I/O operations per second (IOPS), using Third I/O's Iris Storage Platform. These results mark the first time that over one million IOPS has been achieved on a single server or storage hardware platform. In addition, 100% of the benchmarked configuration was created using shipping and proven hardware and software.
The configuration consisted of two HP DL 585 G5 servers connected via Emulex LPe12002 8Gb/s Fibre Channel adapters. Both servers were populated with four AMD Opteron Quad Core 8360 processors, which allowed for an extraordinary level of IOPS and bandwidth performance. The first system was configured as a storage initiator, running Windows 2008 Enterprise Server x64. The second system was configured running Third I/O's Iris Storage Platform, allowing it to operate as a high speed Fibre Channel solid state disk device. The open source IOmeter benchmark was used to verify I/O data rates and disk access times. In addition to the ground breaking IOPS performance, Third I/O's Iris access times averaged an extraordinary 470 microseconds.
"Third I/O is very supportive of open benchmarking with full disclosure on our results." said Mark Lanteigne, founder of Third I/O. "For the last several months, the storage industry has seen several unsubstantiated claims of extraordinary IOPS and bandwidth performance. In fact, some vendors are hyping products that are prototype or several months away from shipping level stability. And rarely do these same vendors provide any reasonable level of benchmark configuration details. It is our hope to bring more clarity to high speed storage initiatives by being the first to publish a performance brief on our experiments."
"The technology that Third I/O, Emulex, and AMD have collaborated to enable provides a 'perfect storm' that helps to realize the true potential of each company's technology, which is illustrated by surpassing the 1 Million IOPS mark on a single server for the first time," said Margaret Lewis, director, Commercial Solutions and Software Strategy, AMD. "We fully expect that future enhancements to Third I/O's software, Emulex's hardware and software, and AMD's processors and chipsets will extend these benchmark results even further."
"The Third I/O benchmark highlights the critical I/O performance and features Emulex's LightPulse(r) 8Gb/s Host Bus Adapters provide, such as support for the Message-Signaled Interrupts eXtended (MSI-X) standard," said Taufik Ma, vice president of product marketing, Emulex Corporation, "Emulex's MSI-X supported HBAs deliver the reduced host CPU utilization and greater I/O scalability required for transaction intensive environments. such as Microsoft SQL Server 2008."
For more information, Third I/O's performance brief can be found at: www.thirdio.com/1million.pdf.
