Gennum Expands ActiveConnect(TM) Family to Enable Industry's Thinnest, Longest Reach HDMI Cables -

The first company to enable full-rate HDMI 1.3 performance and beyond up to 20 meters using thin HDMI cable, Gennum Corporation (TSX: GND) today announced it is expanding its ActiveConnect family with a new multimedia connectivity solution targeted at consumer cabling applications. The new ActiveConnect GV8502 product provides cable manufacturers with a cost-effective, high-quality semiconductor solution for the design of their thin HDMI consumer cables.

Supporting 6 gigabits per second (Gbps) per channel, almost twice the 3.4Gbps/channel required by the HDMI 1.3 High-speed Category 2 specification, the newest ActiveConnect solution can drive multimedia up to 20 meters over consumer-grade HDMI cables, more than double the reach of existing HDMI solutions. Last year, Gennum became the first company to support full-rate HDMI 1.3 with a transmit/receive solution capable of operating at distances of 100 meters over coaxial cable, which has since been globally adopted by cable manufacturers serving the custom install market.

"The GV8502 enables the development of much thinner cabling solutions, which reduces bill-of-materials cost for cable manufacturers, and increases flexibility and ease-of-use for consumers and custom home theater installers," said Amit Thakar, Product Line Manager, Consumer Multimedia, Analog and Mixed-Signal Products Group, Gennum Corporation. "In addition, the new solution doubles the reach of existing HDMI 1.3 Category 2 consumer cables from 10 meters to 20 meters with full-rate HDMI performance, while providing additional performance headroom scalable to 6Gbps/channel. As a result, consumers can realize the full benefits of HDMI 1.3 today, including 1080p deep color, and future-proof their home theater systems for higher bandwidth versions of the specification."

"The market for HDMI products is increasing rapidly, with approximately 144 million HDMI-enabled devices shipped in 2007," said Brian O'Rourke, Principal Analyst at In-Stat. "We expect that to increase to nearly half a billion devices shipped in 2011. With its ActiveConnect technology, Gennum is positioned to capture a significant portion of those households that wish to have flexibility in where they position their advanced consumer electronic devices in the home."

ActiveConnect Enables Thinner, Longer Reach HDMI Consumer Cables

The new ActiveConnect solution has been optimized for thinner cable implementation, while still supporting the latest HDMI specification at unequaled distances. As a result, it gives consumers confidence that disparate multimedia products, such as HDTVs, Blu-Ray players and digital video recorders (DVRs), will connect and stream multimedia at the highest specifications available today at distances previously unattainable using standard HDMI cable. Existing cables will only deliver performance to the specification that was available at the time of their manufacture. Gennum's new ActiveConnect solution ensures that cables will be forward-compatible up to 6Gbps/channel.

The GV8502 extends the company's HDMI connectivity and signal integrity offerings, which are sold to leading manufacturers worldwide. Primarily targeted at broadcast studios and professional applications, the initial ActiveConnect solution, GV8500/GV8501, has seen broad adoption among manufacturers including Gefen, Liberty Cable Products, Canare, Kramer Electronics and Orbital Development. The new GV8502 will enable cable manufacturers to deliver consumer-grade products as early as 4Q 2008.

Reference Design Kit Available

Targeting high-rate HDMI applications, the GV8502-based solution is an active, receive-only solution that will be sold as part of a reference design kit containing a demonstration cable and design collateral. The kit can be leveraged to design cables, dongles, boosters and extenders capable of supporting the full suite of HDMI 1.3 features and functions such as High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for secure content protection. The ActiveConnect reference design kit will be available in July.

Gennum will be demonstrating its ActiveConnect solutions at this week's Infocomm 2008, June 18-20, in Las Vegas.
