Hess Corp. (HES) opened at 96.68. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 95.06 and a high of 99.41. HES is now trading at 98.16, up 2.26 (2.34%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 137.00 in May and set its 52 week low of 53.12 in August. HES has been rising for most of the past year. Hess shares have been rallying today as crude oil prices rose above $133 a barrel Friday on news of an output cut in Nigeria. Technical indicators for the stock are neutral but deteriorating while S&P gives HES a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. If you're looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider an August bull-put credit spread below the $75 range. HES stock could fall up to 23.6% before expiration and this position would still be profitable.

Hess, which is engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, has reported net income of $759 million for the first quarter of 2008, compared to the net income of $370 million for the same period of 2007.
Exploration and production earnings were $824 million in the first quarter of 2008, compared with $340 million in the same period of 2007.
The corporation's oil and gas production, on a barrel-of-oil equivalent basis, was 391,000 barrels per day in the first quarter of 2008, compared with 382,000 barrels per day in the same quarter of 2007.
Marketing and refining earnings were $16 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2008, compared with $101 million for the same period of 2007, primarily reflecting lower refining margins and trading results.
For the first quarter ended March 31, 2008, net cash provided by operating activities was $1.18 billion, compared with $639 million in the same period of 2007.

Paradigm signs EP software service agreement with Hess - Zibb.com

Enterprise software solutions provider Paradigm has signed a multi-year contract with New York-based oil company Hess, for software, training and onsite consulting services for its exploration and production operations worldwide.
Under the new contract, Paradigm will provide a comprehensive suite of geophysical and petrophysical applications for workflows, ranging from seismic data processing, imaging and petrophysical analysis to standard and advanced geophysical subsurface data interpretation and formation evaluation.
The agreement will allow further growth and technology adoption throughout the term of the relationship, and Hess will have the opportunity to incorporate new Paradigm technology as it is developed.
Paradigm will provide training, both onsite and from regional Paradigm support centers, as well as onsite application support to Hess employees. Additionally, Paradigm will deliver onsite consulting services on projects, such as data migration and workflow best practices.
Scott Heck, Hess's senior vice president of exploration and production technology, said: "This new relationship with Paradigm is an investment in optimizing our petrotechnical software toolkit."

Cognos, an IBM company and a provider of business intelligence and performance management solutions, has announced that Hess Corporation, a global integrated energy company, has chosen IBM Cognos BI to deliver business intelligence capabilities across its marketing and refining organization.
Hess will use IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence (BI) within its retail, refining, finance, energy marketing and corporate divisions, connecting all information into a single, enterprise view to provide greater visibility into core business drivers such as customer profitability, inventory levels, and risk positions.
Hess operations and marketing managers will also be able to use IBM Cognos 8 BI Analysis for Microsoft Excel to perform multidimensional analysis on their data using a familiar spreadsheet environment.
Jeff Steinhorn, Chief Information Officer at Hess Corporation, said: "IBM Cognos BI offers Hess the best approach to arming management with self-service access to their information that will ultimately lead to more streamlined operations and better decision-making."
