EPA Environmental Performance Award Presented to Rohm and Haas Kankakee Plant - Zibb.com

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded the Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE:ROH) Kankakee facility with their National Environmental Performance Track Award for progress toward achieving environmental performance goals and the breadth and challenge of those goals.

"Results are what are most important to the EPA," explained Kevin Traynor, Plant Manager. "We drove our efforts to deliver a more environmentally-friendly facility and maintained a competitive position at the same time." The Kankakee plant manufactures water-based polymers for the paint and coatings industry.

The Rohm and Haas Kankakee site was acknowledged for reducing total energy consumption by 28 percent, water usage by more than 4 million gallons or 12 percent, and eliminating its use of ferric chloride by developing a replacement process with their local municipality.

"By rethinking our approaches and discussing options with our local municipality, we challenged ourselves to make adjustments and, in the end, do what's right," concluded Traynor.

The award is recognition of improvement recorded in 2006. These achievements were reached even as its production increased by 18 percent.

As a charter member of the Performance Track program in 2000, the Kankakee operating team has aggressively challenged themselves toward continuous improvement through use of their environmental management systems. "By setting stretch goals, we far exceeded our predictions," added Traynor.

"Goals are established for a three-year period. By measuring against them quarterly, we're able to ensure obstacles are removed and our operations become more sustainable." Traynor summarized, "The entire plant staff works together to reach those goals."

The National Environmental Performance Track drives environmental excellence by encouraging facilities with strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. Members set typically four public, measurable goals to improve the quality of our nation's air, water, and land. Included in the group are major corporations, small businesses, and public facilities.

Rohm and Haas is working to bring sustainable development to a greater forefront of the chemical industry, in part by demonstrating increased operational improvements and product innovation. As part of this commitment, Rohm and Haas recently announced a comprehensive initiative to develop and implement strategic, sustainable development practices across all areas of its businesses and operations. The company formed a partnership with the international non-profit organization, The Natural Step International--a leading global research, education and advisory organization that specializes in developing systematic, science-based approaches for organizations to become more sustainable--as a participant in its Core Funding Partner Program.

Environmentally Advanced Road Markings Pave a Safer Way - Zibb.com

If you live in Wyoming, you drive far more on average than most Americans: almost 22,000 miles a year. Alaskans, however, drive less than half that, or 10,000 miles a year. Regardless of how long you spend behind the wheel in any state, you're following road markings applied with specialized reflective paints on just about every mile of every trip. A leading global specialty materials company has created ingredients for environmentally advanced, high-performance road paints that can make your journeys safer while actually helping the planet. How are the paints doing it? By reducing volatile organic emissions, improving traffic flow and increasing safety.

Specialty materials company Rohm and Haas (NYSE:ROH), headquartered in Philadelphia, has developed an innovative line of acrylic resins that function as road paint binders. The environmentally advanced formulation of these resins is based on water rather than solvents, the traditional binder used in road paints. Waterborne materials preserve air quality for travelers and road crews alike by eliminating the potentially unhealthy and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that solventborne materials emit. In addition, waterborne acrylic resins use renewable water as a main ingredient instead of costly fossil fuels that require energy-intensive transport and refining. This earth-friendly and worker-safe waterborne formulation has drawn positive governmental attention: transportation authorities in the U.S. and a growing number of countries throughout the world are switching to waterborne traffic paints because of increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the excellent performance of these paints.

Road paints made with Rohm and Haas fast dry technology also trump traditional water-borne road paints in other ways. They dry much faster, can be applied in a wide range of temperatures and very importantly, last much longer before needing repainting. Together, these attributes help reduce lane closures and diminish traffic congestion due to roadwork. Besides causing each of us to tap our fingers for more than 60 hours on the freeway every year, traffic congestion is a significant environmental issue. It wastes almost 3 billion gallons of fuel annually while adding to air pollution. And better road markings have an immediate human impact, too. The American Traffic Safety Services Association estimates that almost 3,000 traffic injuries and deaths could be avoided every year simply through improved road markings.

Through these and many other measures, Rohm and Haas is helping to safeguard driver safety and our environment by making the impossible possible.

Set Sail This Summer with Nautical Paint Hues - Zibb.com

Crisp blues, bright whites, and bold reds help signify that summer is just around the corner. There is no better way to celebrate its arrival than to create a sea-faring environment in your living space. "Through the simple use of paint hues, a single room or your entire home can become a harbor for family and friends," Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert with the Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute (PQI) says. "Incorporate these easy paint ideas and treat your family to a day at the beach without ever leaving the driveway."

Traditional navy blue coupled with crisp white evokes a living space reminiscent of a beach vacation. Using blue and white, paint wide nautical stripes and finish with a band of red around the ceiling. Update furniture with a new coat of white paint and decorate with seashells and sailboats.

Create a soothing ocean getaway in your bedroom or bath by incorporating sandy tans, sea glass greens and aqua blues. For a child's room, use beach towels and surfboards as summer color inspiration.

Not ready for an entire room makeover? Transform a foyer into a welcoming reception area by simply painting an accent wall in a hot weather hue complementary to your current color scheme. Sunny yellow, lime green or crisp blue are the perfect paint colors to create a vacation entranceway.

"Through the simple use of breezy summer-like hues, your living space may just become your favorite vacation location," Zimmer says.
