Nov 19, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
19 November 2009 - Swedish-Japanese handset maker Sony Ericsson Mobile
Communications AB plans to close its research and development (R&D)
unit in the Stockholm suburb of Kista in mid-2010, cutting a total 130
jobs, spokesman Gustaf Brusewitz confirmed Wednesday to Swedish
newswire TT.
Sony Ericsson is a 50/50 join venture of Sweden's Ericsson (STO: ERIC)
and Japan's Sony Corp (TYO: 6758).
The closure will also affect some 100 consultants related to the R&D
unit.
The move is part of Sony Ericsson's global cost-reduction programme,
aimed at generating savings of EUR400m. The programme implies that a
total 2,000 employees and consultants will leave the company by the
summer of 2010.
Yesterday's news will not affect Sony Ericsson's R&D unit in Lund,
southern Sweden, where 400 staff, mostly consultants, were given
lay-off notices in May this year.
Sony Ericsson will also close a number of other R&D units, including
those in Chennai, southern India, and in Research Triangle Park in
North Carolina, USA.

NEW YORK, Nov 18, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. is
considering putting itself up for sale in a move that would
leave Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) falling short of the envisioned
benefits from investing in the major movie studio.
Sony gained a 20 per cent stake in MGM as part of a 2004
buyout with U.S. investment firm Providence Equity Partners and
others. With its previous purchase of Columbia Pictures
Entertainment Inc., the deal drew attention as Sony's second
acquisition of a leading Hollywood studio.
The Japanese consumer electronics and entertainment
conglomerate sought to leverage MGM's wealth of hit movies --
including the "007" and "Rocky" series -- in promoting the
Blu-ray standard for next-generation DVDs and creating
synergies with its own motion picture operations.
Blu-ray has since prevailed over the rival HD DVD standard
backed by Toshiba Corp. (TSE:6502). But the MGM management
installed by Providence Equity, which holds a 29 per cent
stake, transferred DVD sales rights from Sony to Twentieth
Century Fox to expand content distribution.
Amid slumping earnings and upcoming debt payments, MGM on
Monday said that the sale of the company was among the options
under consideration.
