Powerwave Technologies Upgrades Public Safety Communications at The Port Authority of New York and
SANTA ANA, Calif., Sep 22, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency that operates some of the nation's busiest and most vital transportation links, including John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports, and the 16-acre World Trade Center site, recently tapped Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global source of wireless infrastructure solutions, to upgrade its public safety wireless communications networks.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has blazed trails in transportation, engineering, law and administration throughout its storied history dating back nearly 300 years. The agency continues to demonstrate its commitment to the people it serves, as well as the advancement of the region, by investing in upgrading and improving its facilities, as well as renewing and preserving its infrastructure.
Earlier this year, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey embarked on a project to replace its legacy equipment to comply with the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 800MHz frequency re-banding requirements. As part of the project, Powerwave was hired to replace key wireless infrastructure components, including donor repeaters, as well as the fiber optic amplifiers for remote locations at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Among the benefits afforded by Powerwave's family of repeaters is the ability to be easily adjusted for re-banding without requiring the replacement of any of its repeater components. With Powerwave's repeaters, re-banding is accomplished simply by remotely (or locally) changing the pass bandwidth from the pre re-banding to the post re-banding frequencies.
"For more than two decades, Powerwave has been designing and installing wireless coverage systems that support and enhance public safety communications for airports, railways and a host of other transit venues," said Dave Quinn, vice president, Global Wireless Solutions. "We are proud to assist The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in fulfilling the FCC's 800MHz re-banding requirements for its public safety wireless network, while improving public safety communications for first responders."
The wireless coverage system for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was completed in August 2008.
In addition to The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Powerwave has expertise in deploying DAS systems for transportation venues such as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA); Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport; and, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Powerwave Introduces New Line of High Power, Fiber Fed Outdoor Repeaters, Expanding Wideband
SANTA ANA, Calif., Sep 29, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global supplier of wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced general availability of its new family of wideband Nexus(TM) FT single- and dual-band repeaters for North American commercial and public safety frequencies.
Powerwave's single- and dual-band Nexus FT repeaters feature a modular and robust design that is easy to install, supports multi-carrier and multi-band operation, and offers high capacity and long-reach fiber optic distribution. This enables deployment up to 15 miles (25km) from an existing base station hotel, extending the coverage area of that base station, and eliminating the need to install additional macro cell sites to cover larger geographic regions.
Optimized for use in Outdoor Distributed Antenna Systems (ODAS), the single- and dual-band Nexus FT repeaters offer a high level of flexibility that also allows cost-effective application in a multitude of indoor environments such as subways, airports, office buildings, shopping malls, stadiums and other large venues.
"Powerwave has found that the limited availability and high cost of real estate, complex permitting requirements and public opposition to large-scale base stations and towers are key factors preventing operators in the U.S. and Canada from constructing macro cell sites," said Dave Quinn, vice president, Wireless Solution Group, Powerwave Technologies, Inc.
"To give our customers another option in overcoming these obstacles, our Nexus FT repeaters are designed to be unobtrusive and are deployable on existing infrastructure such as lamp poles, utility poles or the sides of buildings. This can significantly reduce the zoning and permitting requirements, and provides high quality coverage close to the mobile user to ensure 3G and 4G capabilities can be fully realized in the coverage area," he said.
The Nexus FT repeaters leverage Powerwave's energy efficient multi-carrier power amplifiers (MCPAs), of which the company has fielded more than 1 million worldwide.
Powerwave's Nexus FT repeaters reduce power requirements at the remote site, which makes them ideal for "green" deployments. The ultra linear performance of the Nexus repeaters delivers built-in support for GSM, CDMA, UMTS, EVDO and future communications protocols. Coupled with the integrated broadband fiber transport solution, the Nexus FT provides seamless support for future technologies.
With Powerwave's Nexus FT repeaters, operators can implement new modulation schemes without impacting coverage footprint, which can reduce the costs associated with network upgrades. A maintenance-free passive cooling system eliminates scheduled maintenance, and enables Powerwave's Nexus FT based solutions to deliver the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry.
"The enhanced linearity, efficiency, and reliability of Powerwave's Nexus repeaters delivers a powerful, yet cost-effective means for operators to extend the capacity and reach of their wireless networks," continued Quinn.
Powerwave's Nexus FT repeaters can be managed remotely through Powerwave's Netway Manager, an SNMP-based platform that centrally monitors and manages critical network interconnected remote controlled devices. An option is also available that enables the Nexus FT to be managed via a third-party SNMP-compliant NMS software package.
Powerwave's single- and dual-band Nexus FT repeaters support 800MHz Public Safety, 800MHz iDEN, 850MHz Cellular, 900MHz iDEN, 1900MHz PCS and AWS frequencies.
Powerwave's Nexus FT Dual Band repeaters measure 465 x 530 x 310mm (18.3 x 20.9 x 12.3 inches), and weigh a maximum of 44kg (97 lbs.), although weight does vary based on configuration. All part numbers offer an IP65 and NEMA 4 protection rating, and are fully weather- and lightning-protected for pole, rooftop or tower-top deployments. The repeaters have an operating temperature range of -25C to +55C.
