Actel FPGAs Voted Leading Product in EDNC Innovation Awards for Fifth Year in a Row - Zibb.com

Actel Corporation, the leading provider of low-power FPGAs, announced that its IGLOO(R) nano FPGAs have been voted the Leading Product in the highly competitive Programmable Logic category of the prestigious Electronics Design News China (EDNC) Innovation Awards for 2009.

"We are honored that EDNC's readership, which consists mostly of design engineers, has given industry recognition to an Actel product for the fifth consecutive year," said Rick Lain, director of sales, Asia Pacific for Actel. "When we launched IGLOO nano last year, we knew that we were breaking new ground by taking FPGAs to a whole new space. It's rewarding to see that the design engineering community in China has been quick to show its appreciation and to recognize the significance of 'nano power, nano cost and nano size' in today's consumer-driven economy."

"At Actel, we are increasingly seeing design engineers in China and around the world acknowledging that 'Power Matters' - whether they are designing at the chip level or the system level," said Rich Kapusta, vice president marketing and business development at Actel. "We are pleased that EDNC's readers have recognized the significant contribution that Actel's team has made to address design challenges by providing yet another innovative industry-leading solution with the IGLOO nano product line."

The awards recognize innovation that has led to advancements in either technology or products. A panel of industry experts and EDNC's technical editors selected the finalists for this year's competition. Readers then selected the award recipients from the pool of finalists through an online ballot hosted on EDNC's website.

Actel was presented with its Leading Product award at the annual EDNC Innovation Awards ceremony, which was held in Shenzhen, China, on the 18th of November.

Actel's award-winning IGLOO nano devices are reprogrammable, full-featured flash, low-power FPGAs designed to meet the demanding power and area requirements of today's portable and power-conscious electronics such as smart phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), portable media players (PMPs), portable navigation devices (PNDs), and eBooks.

IGLOO nano low-power FPGAs offer previously unheard of possibilities in power, size, lead-times, operating temperature and cost. IGLOO nano FGPAs are available in logic densities from 10,000 to 250,000 gates; the 1.2 V to 1.5 V devices have been designed for high-volume applications in which power and size are key decision criteria. Priced competitively in the market, IGLOO nano devices are seamless ASIC or ASSP replacements, yet retain the advantages of flexibility and quick time-to-market in the low-power and small footprint profiles offered by Actel FPGAs.

Actel Expands RTAX-DSP FPGAs With New Configurable DSP IP Cores - Zibb.com

Actel Corporation (Nasdaq: ACTL) today announced several highly configurable DSP IP cores expanding the design creation capabilities for the RTAX2000D and RTAX4000D DSP FPGAs. The new cores enable designers to easily create common DSP functions such as filters (FIR, IIR) and transforms (FFT, IFT, DCT). Using a graphical user interface (GUI) embedded in Actel's Libero(R) Integrated Design Environment (IDE), the cores are targeted to RTAX-DSP space-flight FPGAs.

"By providing a simple but powerful user interface, these configurable DSP cores greatly simplify and shorten the design cycle for DSP applications targeting our new RTAX-DSP FPGAs for space-flight applications," said Ken O'Neill director, high reliability product marketing at Actel. "These new offerings expand the horizons of the RTAX series of FPGAs, which already have a well-established space-flight track record."

Actel's DSP IP Cores

The three new cores are supported through comprehensive software dialog windows allowing for the quick selection and configuration of multiple common DSP functions.

    -- Multiplier
-- Multiplier with Adder or Subtractor

    -- Multiplier with Accumulator

The configurable DSP IP cores generate structural netlists in either Verilog or VHDL and can be easily instantiated into a complex RTAX-DSP FPGA design using Actel's Libero IDE and SmartDesign graphical block system design creation tool. Comprehensive handbooks are available to assist designers in building various DSP functions.

The IP cores take advantage of the embedded mathblocks available in RTAX-DSP devices. Each mathblock contains a fast 18-by-18 bit hardware multiplier, plus a 41-bit internal adder-subtractor and register that can be configured for accumulating multiplier results. The multiplier can be broken into two 9-by-9 multipliers when less precision and more multipliers are needed. A number of different pipelining options are available, with optional registers on all inputs and outputs. Mathblocks have cascade outputs and inputs so, for common applications like FIR filters, they may be chained for maximum performance, leaving FPGA fabric resources free. RTAX-DSP devices have up to 120 mathblocks, each of which can perform full-precision multiplications at up to 125 MHz and has built-in protection against radiation-induced single event upsets (SEU) and single event transients (SET).

Availability of the new IP cores marks another milestone in the introduction and support of the RTAX-DSP FPGA product family, which merges enhanced signal processing capabilities with the tried-and-trusted technology of the underlying RTAX architecture and process. This underscores Actel's commitment to provide designers of space-flight systems with the performance and reliability they need.

Pricing and Availability

The cores are available immediately and are included with an Actel Libero IDE Platinum software license, priced at $2495 per seat. Node-locked and floating licenses are available.

Actel Strengthens Fusion Mixed-Signal FPGA IP Offering for xTCA Platform Management Applications -

Actel Corporation (Nasdaq: ACTL) today announced IP core enhancements for hardware platform management applications. Developed in close collaboration with Pigeon Point Systems, an Actel company, the new and improved cores further strengthen the suitability of Actel Fusion(R) mixed-signal FPGAs for platform management applications, and especially xTCA(TM) applications, for which Pigeon Point offers the market-dominant Board Management Reference (BMR) series.

"These DirectCore enhancements further demonstrate the benefits of using Fusion mixed-signal FPGAs for local xTCA management controllers," said Mark Overgaard, president of Pigeon Point Systems. "These enhancements demonstrate the continuing investment by Actel and Pigeon Point Systems in general purpose IP core improvements for management applications."

New and Improved DirectCore Building Blocks

-- CoreLPC v2.0 is a new core that provides an APB3-compliant interface to
the Low Pin Count (LPC) pin-reduced subset of the Peripheral Component
Interconnect (PCI) bus. It also provides an LPC-based implementation of
the Keyboard Controller Style (KCS) interface registers that are defined
in the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) specification.
Fusion-based xTCA management controllers that incorporate CoreLPC can
communicate with unmodified IPMI-compliant applications running on their
        corresponding payload processors.
-- CorePWM v4.0 adds the capability to measure the frequency of fan
tachometer signals. When combined with the current pulse width modulated
(PWM) output capabilities of this block, the tachometer input function
enables closed loop fan management, and thus Fusion-based xTCA
        management controllers for fan trays.

-- CoreI2C v6.0 implements an interface to the I(2)C bus that includes key
in-box management links based on the Intelligent Platform Management Bus
(IPMB). The updated core adds support for a multi-channel configuration
to reduce tile consumption in FPGA designs that require many I(2)C
interfaces. Implementing separate I(2)C channels for each
AdvancedMC(TM) slot in AdvancedTCA(R) and MicroTCA(R) carriers improves
the robustness and performance of these critical in-box management
        links.
