Alcatel-Lucent: Alcatel-Lucent and Regione Liguria sign an agreement to bring expertise and
Sep 04, 2008 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
Paris and Genoa -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Regione Liguria have signed an agreement to extend broadband coverage in the remote areas of the region to help bridge the digital divide. Claudio Burlando, President of Regione Liguria, and Stefano Lorenzi, head of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Italy, Israel and Malta, announced the agreement today during a press conference held at Regione Liguria's headquarters.
Regione Liguria will leverage Alcatel-Lucent's expertise in developing wireline and wireless solutions as well as its professional services and applications capabilities. This cooperation also calls for the participants to promote better understand of technology, which is seen as a pre-requisite to help smooth the development of the Information Society.
This agreement confirms Alcatel-Lucent's commitment to Liguria. In 2005, with the contribution of FILSE, the regional government's organization responsible for the execution of economic and social policies, the company opened a research and development centre in Genoa dedicated to optical transport technologies, thus reinforcing the presence of its optics activities, headquartered in Italy.
In Genoa, Alcatel-Lucent - the leader in the optics market since 2001 according to analyst firm Ovum RHK - develops leading edge products designed to appeal to a worldwide market, with a particular focus on the U.S. market.
At the same time Alcatel-Lucent became part of SIIT (Sistemi Intelligenti Integrati Tecnologie - Integrated Intelligent Systems Technologies), which is the technological district for Intelligent, Integrated Systems* and developed a network of relations with local entities, in particular with the University of Genoa.
"The cooperation between Regione Liguria and Alcatel-Lucent is in the framework of the effort made by Regione Ligura to overcome digital divide in its territory" said Claudio Burlando. "We have a specific commitment: to accomplish broadband coverage of the entire territory by 2009, and to provide enterprises, public administrations, entities promoting culture and young people -those that use Internet - with this fundamental service. The agreements between public and private - growing in number - are meant for guaranteeing the best service to the end users and for assuring a fair competition. Regione Liguria not only supports the extension of broadband in areas not covered by private operators, but it is also committed in investing in contents."
"Since the beginning we believed in the potential of Genoa's territorial system," said Alcatel-Lucent's Stefano Lorenzi.
"The cooperation we announced proves that this vibrant local community supports the skilled engineers who can fuel the advancement of technological infrastructures and broadband applications that ultimately can contribute to the development of the whole economic system, as well as enterprises and universities."
* The technological districts are regional poles of excellence for research and innovation, focused on specific sectors, which are designed to attract economic and scientific resources and increase competitiveness, development as well as industrial technical expertise in a territory.

Alcatel-Lucent Receives Mobile WiMAX(TM) Certification from the WiMAX Forum(R) - Zibb.com
PARIS, September 4, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has been awarded the WiMAX Forum Certified(TM) seal of approval for its WiMAX 802.16e Compact Base Station at 2.5GHz. This achievement further confirms Alcatel-Lucent's leadership in WiMAX and its commitment to accelerate the development of a global and open WiMAX(TM) eco-system.
Alcatel-Lucent's infrastructure portfolio is made up of products that strictly comply with the 802.16e-2005 standard (also called Rev-e), which supports fixed, nomadic and mobile services. The company's "Open CPE Program" is helping to accelerate the availability of terminals by encompassing comprehensive interoperability testing programs with WiMAX chipset and end-user device suppliers.
This significant milestone is also the first step toward the certification of the company's entire portfolio of WiMAX solutions already available in other licensed frequency bands and deployed in several networks worldwide, including some in commercial service today in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Alcatel-Lucent expects its 3.5GHz equipment to be WiMAX Forum Certified by end of 2008.
"Alcatel-Lucent is proud to receive the WiMAX Forum Certified designation, which acknowledges the development efforts we have made over the last four years," said Karim El Naggar, Vice President and head of Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX activities. "Customers can be confident that Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX solution complies with the most stringent requirements of the standard and smoothly interoperates with any WiMAX Forum Certified device."
Karim El Naggar pointed out that, unique in the industry, Alcatel-Lucent systematically guarantees strict alignment of features and compliance at 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5GHz, as part of its global mobile WiMAX(TM) strategy. He noted that with 30 commercial contracts and more than 70 trials around the world, "Alcatel-Lucent is the undisputed leader in the WiMAX market," he said.
Currently the WiMAX Forum has more than 530 member companies including service providers, regulators, equipment vendors, chip vendors and content providers. Alcatel-Lucent is a member of the WiMAX Forum board.
"The first series of Mobile WiMAX certifications by the WiMAX Forum represent a critical milestone for the WiMAX industry as it will further accelerate the availability of interoperable solutions and ensure widespread adoption and deployment of WiMAX technology and products," said Ron Resnick, President of the WiMAX Forum. "Alcatel-Lucent is playing a key role in taking that important step with the WiMAX Forum, enabling the global WiMAX community to benefit from fully interoperable infrastructures and devices."
To earn this certification, Alcatel-Lucent's 802.16e WiMAX products underwent rigorous and extensive series of tests by the WiMAX Forum's lead certification laboratory partner, AT4 wireless, spanning protocol conformance, radio conformance and interoperability testing.
"Achieving Mobile WiMAX certification is the result of the teamwork between leading wireless companies and our lab people, the most experienced in WiMAX certification testing world-wide. That is why AT4 wireless would like to thank Alcatel-Lucent for its key contribution towards putting in place the necessary process and tools," said Fernando E. Hardasmal, Deputy General Director at AT4 wireless.
In addition to being a board member of the WiMAX Forum, Alcatel-Lucent is a founding member of the Open Patent Alliance formed by key industry players to advance WIMAX 4G technology.

Sep 03, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
France-based telecoms equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent has announced the appointment of Philippe Camus as the company's non-executive chairman, and Ben Verwaayen as CEO.
Camus will replace Serge Tchuruk as non-executive chairman. Prior to his new role, Camus served as a managing partner of media group Lagardere and a partner of New York-based investment and advisory firm Evercore Partners. He also served as co-chief executive at EADS.
Verwaayen will replace Patricia Russo as chief executive and will also join the company's board of directors. Prior to his new role, he served as chief executive of BT. He was also vice-chairman of the board of Lucent Technologies in the US and worked with KPN in the Netherlands for nine years as president and managing director of its telecom subsidiary PTT telecom.
Russo and Tchuruk resigned in July after the company reported a second-quarter loss of E222m ($345.6m) on revenue down 5.2% at E4.1 billion ($6.45 billion), its sixth straight quarterly loss.
The company said: "Philippe Camus and Ben Verwaayen are respected and experienced business leaders.
