Neither company had an immediate comment for the Wall Street Journal article. EDS shares soared 26% to $23.80 on volume of 8.5 million shares, nearly triple the 30-day average of about 2.9 million shares. The intraday high of $25.40 is the highest price seen since Aug. 2.

H-P's stock, which is a component of the Dow industrials, shed 4.3% to $47.02 on volume of 16.7 million shares, compared with the 30-day average of 12.3 million shares. The shares pulled back from an intraday high of $49.97 hit earlier in the session, which was the highest price seen since Jan. 2.

Representatives of both H-P and EDS weren't available for comment to Thomson Financial.

In addition, HP will donate approximately $300,000 fair market value worth of IT equipment to help rebuild local schools in the affected communities. HP has established an "earthquake emergency relief team" in China that will work to identify and support affected customers and mobilize volunteer teams to help recovery efforts. These volunteers will help with rebuilding and provide technical expertise to schools and communities in need.
