Juniper Networks and O'Reilly Media announced the publishing of the book, The Sustainable Network: The Accidental Answer for a Troubled Planet.
As a special project of Juniper's corporate green initiatives, The Sustainable Network reveals how a global communications network can help solve the complex environmental, economic, social and political challenges facing the planet, the company said.
According to a release, The Sustainable Network demonstrates why the global network is the best sustainable technology available to help people tackle problems and that its future depends on the continued penetration of broadband, as well as industry change at all layers of the OSI Model.
The Sustainable Network features the products and services of the entire information and communications technology industry, from routers to mobile phones, from computers to data centers.
"The Sustainable Network was a special project undertaken by a dedicated team at Juniper, as well as many advisors and network engineers from both Juniper and other companies," said R.K. Anand, executive vice president, Foundation Technologies at Juniper Networks. "The result is a book that is completely unique and aligned to the needs of this modern world. This is a book for anyone who uses a laptop, or has a Facebook page or uses their iPhone to stay connected. Regardless of where you are, the global network connects us all and The Sustainable Network is a wake-up call for what we could do with that amazing connection."
The book's author, Sarah Sorensen, is a sustainability consultant. She spent eight years at Juniper Networks, most recently as the senior manager of Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability. She was also a founding member of the company's Green Taskforce, which is responsible for developing a green strategy and executing it across the company.
Juniper Networks delivers software, silicon and systems to the networking industry.

With the help of Juniper Networks, the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center in Alaska has deployed a secure 10 Gbps Ethernet network that provides employees, visitors and researchers with secure, high-speed access to video, voice, business and Web applications.
As part of a major, multiyear expansion, the Anchorage Museum enlisted Juniper Networks to provide a reliable and secure network that could be operated with minimal IT staff.
"While we may be considered a small business by IT industry standards, we still have the need for an enterprise-quality campus network so that our operations run smoothly," said Doug Adams, IT director, Anchorage Museum. "With Juniper Networks, not only are we able to deploy a wide range of solutions that meet our specific needs, we also have the benefit of significant cost savings and ease of deployment. Juniper is now our single network provider that offers the best products from the network edge to the end user."
Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet switches, featuring Virtual Chassis technology, form the network core, with Juniper Networks EX3200 Ethernet switches in the access layer. The core is a 10 Mbps metro Ethernet fiber ring that supports the museum's virtualized server and storage environment. Juniper Networks J Series Services Routers are employed as border routers. The primary Internet connection is made through a Juniper Networks J2300 Services Router, which is also protected by Juniper Networks SSG Series Secure Services Gateways and delivers high-performance security.
The company said that its EX4200 line of Ethernet switches provides high-speed, carrier-class performance in a compact form factor. Virtual Chassis technology enables up to 10 EX4200 switches to be interconnected and operate as a single logical device, reducing management overhead and operational expenses. The EX4200 switches also include high availability features such as redundant, hot-swappable internal power supplies and field-replaceable, multi-blower fan trays to ensure maximum uptime.
"We're seeing more demand from small-to-medium-sized businesses for the types of solutions more commonly seen in large enterprises," said Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager, Service Layer Technology Business Group at Juniper Networks. "Our solutions are designed to be robust and scalable to meet the demands of even the most complex and demanding secure environments, including the Anchorage Museum which relies on a defense-in-depth design for the network that helps address the needs of employees and visitors alike."

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov 18, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
With the help of Juniper Networks(R) (NYSE: JNPR), the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center in Alaska has deployed a secure 10 Gbps Ethernet network that provides employees, visitors and researchers with secure, high-speed access to video, voice, business and Web applications. As part of a major, multiyear expansion, the Anchorage Museum enlisted Juniper Networks to provide a seamless, reliable and secure network that could be easily operated with minimal IT staff, lowering its total cost of ownership by up to 63 percent compared to competitive solutions over a five-year period.
The single rack-unit EX4200 and EX3200 switches are easy to deploy and manage, and both are powered by the field-proven Juniper Networks Junos(R) software, which delivers operational efficiency across Juniper switch and router products.
Juniper Networks J Series Services Routers deliver reliable connectivity with a powerful blend of high-performance networks and advanced services. J Series routers also leverage the modular Junos software and consolidate security, application optimization, and voice capabilities on a single, easy-to-manage platform.
Additionally, the Anchorage Museum replaced its IPsec VPN client software solution on devices with Juniper Networks SA Series SSL VPN Appliances, so employees have secure anywhere, anytime access to corporate resources from any device with a Web browser. The SSL VPN plays a vital role in allowing public remote access for users to the network.

Juniper Networks announced that the European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC) has completed a commissioned performance verification of its Juniper Networks MX80 3D Universal Edge Router and new 16 port 10GbE aggregation line card.
Juniper Network said its Junos Trio chipset is the first member of the Junos One family of processors that represents integration of silicon and software, establishing new boundaries for networking. EANTC tested the Junos Trio-based products and verified the MX Series 3D routers density, throughput performance and service scale.
"We are committed to objectively testing networking solutions with the strictest methodology and were honored to be the first lab commissioned to evaluate these solutions," said Carsten Rossenhoevel, managing director at EANTC. "Our analysis confirmed Juniper's Junos Trio chipset is setting new standards for performance, services and scalability, while providing a significant improvement in power efficiency."
The completed tests from EANTC confirm the performance metrics of the MX480 3D Universal Edge Router, including a validated up to 1.4Tbit/s, 240Gbits/s per slot unidirectional, with throughput able to exceed one billion packets per second, in a compact sixth of a rack configuration. Additionally, services scale displayed 6,000 active Layer 3 VPNs and 6,000 active VPLS instances, as well as a 25.34 watts per 10GbE and 3.38 watts per gigabit of throughput in full configuration.
The chipset will be delivered in Juniper's new MX Series 3D routers, providing "Universal Edge" routing for business, residential and mobile services at massive scale on a single network.
Juniper's MX Series 3D products are available starting December 2009. The MX Series 3D 16-port 10GbE aggregation line card will be generally available to customers in December 2009, with additional MX Series 3D products coming throughout 2010.
The European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) offers vendor-neutral consultancy and test facilities for network equipment manufacturers, service providers and enterprise customers. Primary business areas include interoperability, conformance, and performance testing for Carrier Ethernet, IP/MPLS, and Triple Play technologies and applications.
