RIT Student Team Honored at Microsoft Imagine Cup World Finals - Zibb.com
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jul 08, 2008 (ASCRIBE NEWS via COMTEX) --
A student team from Rochester Institute of Technology has won an Engineering Excellence Award at the 2008 Microsoft Imagine Cup World Finals in Paris.
Ziyan (Joe) Zhou, Adam Risi and Zachery Shivers, named Team Sparx, programmed and configured a network of sensors to take readings of such environmental variables as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, and set the system up to be accessible via cell phone. The team's design previously won the Software Design Invitational at the U.S. Imagine Cup finals in April.
The Engineering Excellence Achievement Award, sponsored by Microsoft's Enterprise Engineering Center, is designed to recognize three outstanding teams from the Software Development category that have created solutions that demonstrate the potential to be developed to scale with focused guidance from a Microsoft engineer.
A total of 370 students representing 61 countries and regions competed in the Imagine Cup World Finals in nine categories. Winners were announced during the Imagine Cup World Festival held at the Louvre in Paris, July 8.
"The Imagine Cup provides a forum for students around the world to explore new ways to use the power of software to help address some of the world's toughest challenges," said S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft. "The high caliber of the students and their projects is evidence of the high level of innovation seen in the student community today, with a clear potential for real-world impact."
This is the second year in a row an RIT student participated in the Imagine Cup World Finals. In 2007, Zhou was part a four-person team that developed a software application, utilizing social-networking technology, to assist in foreign language instruction. The team also included students from Western Washington University, Texas A&M University and McGill University and competed in the software design category.
"I am thrilled to have had a second chance to compete in the Imagine Cup World Finals, and I am incredibly pleased that the judges believed our project was worthy of such a prestigious award," adds Zhou, a third-year computer science major. "The Imagine Cup event is like the Olympic Games, bringing together the best student researchers from around the globe, and I am truly honored to have had not one but two opportunities to participate."

CoroWare Unveils Availability and Pricing of CoroWare ClassPack for Microsoft Robotics Studio -
BOSTON, Jul 08, 2008 (ASCRIBE NEWS via COMTEX) --
CoroWare Technologies, a subsidiary of CoroWare, announced pricing and availability of CoroWare ClassPack for Microsoft Robotics Studio (CoroWare ClassPack), a simulation software package that complements its CoroBot mobile robot product line.
Combined with CoroWare's CoroBot, ClassPack is a solution for teaching and research. By using the CoroWare ClassPack services, Coroware said students can write robotics applications that will run both in simulation and on a real CoroBot. ClassPack features a classroom environment which allows the robot to encounter common objects found in an office or classroom.
"Simulation is the perfect tool for educators and researchers since they can realistically model any environment without the pains and costs involved with creating that environment," said Sara Morgan, CoroWare Robotic Software Engineer, and author of "Programming Microsoft Robotics Studio." "Students and researchers can experiment with a lower-cost version of CoroBot in the simulation environment, and then run their application on a real CoroBot in the classroom or lab."
CoroWare plans to make CoroWare ClassPack generally available at the end of June 2008 with two licensing options. An unlimited license will allow ClassPack to be installed and run on a single computer with no expiration date for a suggested retail price of $299, the company said.
"We are excited to see CoroWare continue to build upon its expertise in robotics simulation and its line of products," said Dan Kara, industry analyst and president of Robotics Trends. "We believe the introduction of new products to the market like CoroWare ClassPack will further drive the adoption of robotics at universities and colleges worldwide."

Microsoft plans business servers for small businesses - Zibb.com
Jul 09, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
Microsoft has announced plans to launch two new business servers in November targeted at the small businesses that lack large IT departments to handle installation and maintenance.
The Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS) and Windows Essential Business Server 2008 (EBS) will be known together as the Windows Essential Server Solutions (ESS).
The SBS, code-named Cougar, is a smaller version of Windows Server 2008, the server operating system counterpart to the Windows Vista desktop operating system. The standard edition comes with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and Windows Live OneCare for Server, whereas the premium version includes the small business version of SQL Server 2008.
The company developed EBS, code-named Centro, for mid-sized businesses with sophisticated IT needs, offering additional messaging, management, and security.
Steven VanRoekel, senior director of Windows Server Solutions Group at Microsoft, said: "Some partners told us they believe they will be able to increase their customer base by 25% to 50% with SBS 2008. Other partners foresee 20% to 50% growth of their customer base with EBS 2008, because it allows them to more easily deliver products, consulting and deployment services for midsized clients."
The servers will be available at $1,089 for SBS and $5,472 for EBS.

Priasoft Delivers Latest Migration Tool: Public Folder Migration Manager - Zibb.com
PHOENIX, Jul 09, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Priasoft, Inc., leader in Microsoft Exchange migration and management software, announces the latest addition to its migration solutions for Exchange migration, Priasoft Public Folder Migration Manager, with support for customers moving from Microsoft Exchange 5.5, 2000, 2003, or 2007 to Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003, or 2007. The new product continues the company's tradition of delivering award-winning, and best-of-breed Exchange-to-Exchange migration solutions at value prices.
"Many organizations that use Exchange Server have amassed a huge number of public folders over the years," said Eriq VanBibber, vice president of Enterprise Messaging Products, Priasoft. "When they decide to migrate both business and technical challenges can arise. Using our years of experience and knowledge of migrations, we delivered a next generation product to help transition Exchange Public Folders between Exchange versions, in addition, new technology allowing customers to migrate public folders, content, and permissions to the file system. Furthermore, we have plans in a future release to support migration from Exchange Public folders directly to Microsoft SharePoint."
Organizations typically store large amounts of data in Exchange Public Folders, and need a solution to transition this to new versions of Exchange. Transitions occur for several reasons; the two main business drivers are customers moving to new versions of Exchange and during merger and acquisitions. Public Folder Migration Manager helps organizations save time and money and improve performance during migration. Project management is centralized within a single console, allowing administrators to schedule migrations when convenient for the organization, manage multiple migration jobs, and to execute bulk migrations to speed up the process.
With data movement on this scale, data integrity is a key concern. Public Folder Migration Manager allows Content restrictions to migrating folders to clean up and restrict the data that is migrated to the new target environment.
A new option for IT with this release is the ability to migrate Exchange Public Folders to the file system. Customers can choose to migrate public folders to the file system; maintaining folder structure, permissions, and content or elect a split migration. In a spilt migration scenario, customers move only relevant content to the target Exchange environment and less relevant content to the file system during a single migration operation. Once public folder content is in the file system, it can be used directly by end users or consumed by document management or archiving systems.
Priasoft Public Folder Migration Manager represents Priasoft's next step in supporting its comprehensive strategy for management of Microsoft Exchange Public Folders. A future release of the product will support migration of Exchange Public Folders directly to Microsoft SharePoint.
Customers may purchase the Priasoft Public Folder Migration Manager today by calling 602-801-2400 or emailing sales@priasoft.com. A free evaluation is available at www.priasoft.com.
