Flamengo terminates agreement with Nike - Zibb.com

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --

Brazilian football club Flamengo announced on Tuesday that it terminated the agreement it held with U.S. headquartered sportswear and equipment supplier Nike.

"Flamengo regards the agreement with Nike as terminated. Now we will wait for the lawsuit," said Michel Asseff, the club's attorney.

According to the club, the relationship with the company has been harmed by a series of events. The most recent one was the fact that Nike released a special jersey to celebrate Flamengo's 2008 state championship title before the tournament's final game took place.

Despite Flamengo's 3-1 victory over Botafogo on Sunday, the club did not approve of the supplier's attitude in the episode, and notified Nike of it.

"That was something very serious, which offended our principles, the sport's principles, and Flamengo is not an arrogant club," stressed Asseff. What Nike did was to patronize Flamengo's adversaries. We do not want business with them anymore."

The attorney added that the team could possibly wear an alternative uniform, different from the one designed by Nike, in the Libertadores Cup's quarterfinal rematch against Mexico's America on Wednesday in Rio.

"The decision concerning the uniform on Wednesday is on the board of directors, but I do think there is the possibility of an alternative uniform," he highlighted.

Nike and Finish Line open new retail concept store in Arizona - Zibb.com

Nike and The Finish Line have announced the opening of a new retail experience called Finish Line Ltd customized to meet the needs of young running and training athletes. The concept store is located at the Chandler Fashion Center near Phoenix, Arizona.

Finish Line Ltd will be divided into three sections: running, sport style and training. It will offer an enhanced level of customer service including in-store demonstrations of product by trained running sales associates, the company said.

Charlie Denson, president of Nike brand, said: "This new store will serve young athletes who have a passion for running and training. We're partnering with Finish Line to offer a higher level of service, a deeper connection to the local running community and a strengthened product assortment. Its part of our long-term strategy to elevate the marketplace, create energy at retail and connect with consumers in our core categories."

Alan Cohen, CEO of Finish Line, said: "We are excited to see what the new store design, enhanced service level and tighter product assortment can do for sales. This store will cater to the young athletes in Phoenix with its unique product assortment and opportunities for customization."

U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team, New Team Look to Be Introduced to Fans and Media In NYC On June

WHAT:       On Monday, June 30, the United States' top basketball
            players, including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo
            Anthony and Dwyane Wade, will assemble in New York City to
            take part in an unprecedented fan celebration and
            unveiling of the Men's Basketball Team that will compete
            for Team USA at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

            Led by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Team USA will gather at
            Rockefeller Center's famed ice rink for a team
            introduction that will feature all 12 members of the squad
            that will represent the United States this summer. The
            event will be hosted by TV personality Kevin Frazier.

            During the event, Nike will also unveil Team USA's new
            Swift System of Dress basketball uniform. The new Nike
            designed uniform eliminates 24 centimeters of material and
            reduces the weight by 31 percent. The uniform also
            features Nike Aerographics, an engineered mesh providing
            zoned cooling that reduces up to half the yarn, making it
            more lightweight and breathable. An exclusively designed
            "We the People" graphic, inspired by USA's rich history,
            is also integrated into the uniform.

            In addition to Team USA's uniform design, Nike will
            showcase the USA Nike Hyperdunk colorway. The Nike
            Hyperdunk is 18 percent lighter than the average Nike
            basketball shoe and is the lightest and strongest
            basketball shoe Nike has ever created. Key products
            inspired by the USA Basketball uniform and Hyperdunk
            footwear featuring Flywire technology will be available to
            consumers beginning July 26th.
