Websense Announces New Web Security Gateway for Real-Time Protection From Web 2.0 Threats - Zibb.com

Websense, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBSN), the market share and technology leader in Web security, today announced the managed release of new software that provides real-time security protection from today's dynamic Web 2.0 threats -- allowing businesses to use the Web and new Web 2.0 technologies to advance their business with the assurance that their employees and their essential information are safe from the growing number of threats found on the Web.

The new Websense(R) Web Security Gateway solves growing challenges brought on by the explosion of Web 2.0 technologies including user-generated content, mashups, interactive networking sites and Web applications. Providing inline inspection of Web traffic, SSL traffic, Web 2.0 applications, and more than 100 network protocols, Websense Web Security Gateway classifies new and dynamic content in real-time, determining immediately whether the Web site and its content are safe. The software categorizes actual content on Web sites -- not just the sites themselves -- providing an unparalleled granular approach that allows users to access Web sites but block portions of sites deemed inappropriate or a security risk. This breakthrough solution is achieved by implementing the Websense ThreatSeeker(TM) Network identification and classification technologies at the customers' gateway, protecting them from never before seen threats and Web content.

"The fundamental shift of Web content creation from trusted sources to anonymous and user-driven collaborations such as wikis, blogs and social networking sites has changed the threat landscape," said Lawrence Orans, research director for Gartner. "Attackers are targeting 'trusted' Web sites with good reputations to circumvent traditional security measures and maximize attack effectiveness. To enable legitimate business use of these sites while still protecting against inbound and outbound malware, organizations are increasingly demanding Secure Web Gateway solutions that go beyond traditional URL filtering to provide real-time inspection of malicious Web content and granular Web application control."

More and more, organizations and their employees are adopting Web 2.0 technologies for legitimate business reasons. But introducing these new technologies without dynamic Web security protection can lead to compromise and data loss. For example, iGoogle Web portals, which are a personalized mashup of different applications and news feeds, may contain valuable business tools, but on the same page a compromised application could expose businesses to risk. Websense Web Security Gateway solves this problem by allowing users to access and view their iGoogle page while protecting users from specific applications, if a risk or inappropriate for business use, within the page in real-time.

"We believe this solution is the answer to the growing problem of Web 2.0 threats and the massive amount of Web content created every day," said John McCormack, senior vice president of technology, Websense. "Only the Websense Web Security Gateway is able to provide real-time protection from malicious content, allowing our customers to use Web 2.0 tools to drive business growth without having to worry about security or productivity drains."

The Industry Innovator in Advanced Web Threat Protection

The pioneer in developing security protection for the Web, Websense has steadily released new technology enhancements to combat the changing Web 2.0 threat environment and protect customers' essential information. In March 2008, the company announced its next-generation research and classification system -- the ThreatSeeker(TM) Network -- the technological foundation for the new Websense Web Security Gateway. In August 2007, Websense deployed new systems across the Internet called "HoneyJax" that emulate user behavior within Web 2.0 applications to uncover threats before they spread.

Increasingly cybercriminals are launching attacks that take advantage of the flaws in traditional security that rely on signatures and Web reputation. In April 2008, Websense discovered hundreds of thousands of well-trafficked, well-known Web sites with "good" reputations that attackers compromised simultaneously. Unlike traditional security, the Websense Web Security Gateway can analyze Web traffic and the Web site content in real-time and immediately protect customers from malicious Web content.

Websense Web Security Gateway is built on more than 10 years of Web security research and powered by the Websense ThreatSeeker(TM) Network, which discovers and analyzes billions of disparate pieces of Internet content every day to rapidly identify newly-infected sites, malware and attack methods.

The managed release of the Websense Web Security Gateway is planned for June 2008. For more information visit: www.websense.com/version7
