Florida Hit by Three-Minute Burglaries

The Jewelers' Security Alliance is reporting a rash of three-minute burglaries in Florida. Palm Coast, Orlando, Daytona Beach, and Altamonte Springs, are among the locations where these crimes are being reported since Sept. 1, according to the JSA email Crime Alert released Thursday.

Dollar losses for all crime categories in 2006 fell 5.1 percent to $105.8 million. The number of off-premises crimes, principally against traveling salespersons, decreased from 181 to 155, which is the fewest since the 1980s.

The end of May saw a spate of three-minute burglaries, reports the Jewelers' Security Alliance. On May 31 in Edinburgh, IN, a crew of six, wearing masks and gloves, broke through the front door of a retail jewelry store at 4:29 a.m.

The Jewelers' Security Alliance is warning retailers in the Sacramento, Calif., area that there have been an “unusually large number” of three-minute burglaries during the past few months. The areas that have been hit hard include Rocklin, Citrus Heights, Lincoln, Elk Grove, and Woodland, JSA said

JSA Says Crime Down Overall in 2004
The Jewelers' Security Alliance released its annual report on crime statistics in the U.S. for 2004, showing that on-premises crimes against jewelers (primarily retailers) totaled $76.3 million in losses, an 11% decline from 2003.
