Excel Maritime Carriers Q2 net income surges

Excel Maritime Carriers, a provider of seaborne transportation services for dry bulk cargoes, has reported net income of $126.8 million or $3.14 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2008, compared to net income of $20 million or $1 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2007.

Excel Maritime Carriers has agreed to acquire Quintana Maritime, a provider of dry bulk marine transportation services, pursuant to a definitive merger agreement whereby Quintana would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Excel.
