Economy Forcing Students to Broaden Their College Options; Schools Must Be Fast and Friendly to
CHICAGO, Nov 18, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Speaking at the American Marketing Association's Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education, Liz Brohan, President and Co-CEO of Chicago marketing firm Colman Brohan Davis, today urged colleges to evolve their student acquisition and retention strategies or be left behind in an increasingly competitive landscape. Her comments were made as the poor economy is forcing many prospective students to broaden their options and approach schools they may not originally have considered.
In a presentation titled "Be the First Responder: How to Acquire and Retain More Students," Brohan and her co-presenters, Gina Miller, Vice President, Director of Customer Engagement at Colman Brohan Davis, and Tasha Patterson, Online Marketing Manager for DeVry University, spoke about the need for schools to quickly communicate a positive brand experience from the very first contact with a prospective student.
"A student will typically make initial contact online with several schools," said Brohan. "Response time is a huge differentiator and an important indicator of how much a school cares, and whether the student continues the process. Often, the school that responds the quickest gets the student. It's that simple, but it can be complicated to achieve."
Brohan also noted that to attract and retain students, colleges must deploy systems for fast and personalized response, as well as ongoing student-centric communications for conversion and retention. "In this economy, students are in charge . . . not schools," she said. "A school needs to demonstrate commitment to the student, not the other way around."
Co-presenter Tasha Patterson advised other higher education marketing leaders that delivering timely, consistent and personalized communications is a central success strategy for DeVry. "It's part of making a large school feel like a small one," she said. The presentation outlined approaches to achieving greater responsiveness as well as targeting to ensure better use of marketing budgets.
All colleges need systems in place to maintain a level of constant contact to bring students through the conversion cycle. Customized, automated e-mail is one tool. "In the end, this is about initiating and building lasting and worthwhile relationships," Brohan concluded.
Liz Brohan is President and Co-CEO of Colman Brohan Davis (www.cbdmarketing.com), a Chicago-based brand strategy and integrated marketing firm with sector expertise for higher education clients. Gina Miller is Vice President, Director of Customer Engagement, at Colman Brohan Davis. Tasha Patterson is Online Marketing Manager for DeVry University (www.devry.edu), which serves a diverse and geographically dispersed student population of over 48,000.

Peter Kiewit Sons Co. Continues to Support Families While Investigation Continues - Zibb.com
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Nov 18, 2008 (Marketwire via COMTEX) --
Peter Kiewit Sons Co. continues to focus the majority of its efforts today on supporting the families of the employees who lost their lives in Sunday's plane crash. At this time, the names on the plane's manifest will not be released, at the request of the families. Kiewit appreciates the support of the media who have withheld name publication out of respect for the families, despite the fact they have been widely reported.
Operations on Kiewit's projects, with the exception of the Plutonic Power run-of-river hydroelectric site, have resumed normal site activities. Work at the Plutonic Power site will resume fully by tomorrow morning. Grief counselors will remain on site at the camp as long as they are needed.
The BC Coroner's Service is at the crash site today and has advised Kiewit that they will be expediting the recovery and return of the bodies to the families.
A further update is anticipated by the end of the day.
