Students are the Stars as Co-Producers Ryerson University and AMC Canada Premiere State-of-the-Art
TORONTO, Sep. 16, 2008 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) --
Ryerson University and AMC Canada are pleased to present a venture eight years in the making: education in high definition. Beginning this fall, Ryerson students play a starring role at Yonge-Dundas AMC 24 where 12 movie theatres have been engineered into state-of-the-art lecture theatres. Working closely together with AMC from concept to construction of the space in Toronto Life Square, Ryerson has outfitted the theatres with cutting edge presentation technology to create ultramodern lecture facilities. Students and faculty alike benefit from the exceptional learning and teaching environment.
"Ryerson University is proud to be part of the revitalization of the downtown core," said Sheldon Levy, President, Ryerson University. "With the vision and support of Councillor Kyle Rae and local business and community leaders, Yonge-Dundas and Toronto Life Square is springing to life. We are delighted to be working with AMC to provide innovative classrooms designed with students in mind. This is exactly what we envisioned when we launched Ryerson's Master Plan and declared our intention to focus on 'the University as city-builder': with energetic partnerships and great ideas, our aim is to move Ryerson and Toronto forward together."
Ryerson has invested approximately $1 million in equipping the theatres with state-of-the art presentation technology which surpasses that offered by most universities in North America. The lecture theatres feature full high definition projectors, Blu-Ray DVD players, interactive tablet technology, removable tablet arms for writing, superb acoustics and custom-designed lighting and mobile lecterns. Two separate A/V systems operate within each theatre so that there are separate projection, sound and lighting systems for Ryerson's educational uses.
Approximately 8,000 students take classes this fall in the AMC theatres every week, attending the 40 courses offered there. Classes run Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in theatres that each seat between 125 and 285 people. A broad range of students and faculty from a variety of arts, science and engineering programs have the opportunity to experience various applications of the cutting edge technology. Used in the mornings when movie theatres are normally empty, the Ryerson AMC Lecture Theatres enable Ryerson to use valuable resources on its doorstep, a highly sustainable alternative to building new facilities.
"The Ryerson AMC lecture theatres provide an excellent environment to teach in," said Dr. Krishnan Venkatakrishnan, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and 2008 Early Researcher Award recipient. "Students are comfortable in their seats, so they are less restless and they concentrate more. Attendance has even increased since moving to the new space. In my Manufacturing Fundamentals class we work a lot with metrology. The large screen and high definition projector really help engage the students-even the students at the back can see all the gradations on the ruler, which enables them all to participate in the class."
Students also like the convenience of lecture theatres that are fully accessible and linked directly to the subway.
"It's nice to have more space on campus", said Muhammad Ali Jabbar, President, Ryerson Students' Union. "Given the under-funding of universities this is an innovative initiative that strives to meet the growing needs of our urban campus."
AMC Theatres and Ryerson University both have long histories of innovation and creative problem-solving. Ryerson, known for creating real-world answers to real-world problems, has come up with a number of creative solutions to meet the challenges of continuing student demand. In 2006 the University opened the Ted Rogers School of Management at 575 Bay Street in a unique joint venture with Cadillac Fairview. The Ryerson Athletics Centre (RAC) is located underground beneath the University quadrangle, one of the first green roofs in Toronto.
AMC is known for many of the innovations that moviegoers enjoy today, including the world's first shopping centre "twin" theatre in 1963, the multiplex and North American megaplex concepts. The company has also designed the cupholder armrest, the first-ever ATM-style ticketing system and the unique LoveSeat(R)-style theatre seating.
Ryerson University is Canada's leader in career-focused education, offering close to 90 PhD, master's, and undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Arts; the Faculty of Communication & Design; the Faculty of Community Services; the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science; and the Ted Rogers School of Management. Ryerson University has graduate and undergraduate enrolment of 25,000 students. With more than 64,000 registrations annually, The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is Canada's leading provider of university-based adult education.

TuVox Announces Guaranteed Success Program for Speech Applications - Zibb.com
CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct 30, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
TuVox, the caller experience company, today announced the TuVox Guaranteed Success Program(TM) ("GSP") to help companies create an indisputable business case for next-generation speech applications. The TuVox GSP takes the pay-for-performance concept one step further by guaranteeing that the TuVox solution will outperform a company's existing touch-tone IVR, or the company will receive free tuning and usage services until it does. This first-of-its-kind guarantee is based on TuVox's success in migrating touch-tone applications to speech in several large and complex implementations.
For companies that are skeptical about speech recognition, TuVox's Guaranteed Success Program removes the risk and makes it easier to decide between competing contact center initiatives. Now, companies can be assured of automation rates and cost reduction metrics when they implement next-generation IVR systems.
"TuVox's Guaranteed Success Program provides companies with risk mitigation at obviously more attractive price points," said Daniel Hong, Lead Analyst of Customer Interaction Technologies at Datamonitor. "This comes at a time in the market where companies need to 'do more with less' and leverage speech strategically to reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction. We expect that GSP will have continued uptake in the market as conditions become more challenging and companies become more creative with purchasing and execution."
The TuVox GSP is constructed using mutually-defined target automation metrics and includes speech application monitoring and tuning services to ensure success. To meet its guarantee within the GSP, TuVox speech applications leverage the TuVox On Demand lifecycle management system, the TuVox Always Be Callable (ABC) iterative development process and the deep expertise of the TuVox Design Center.
"Contact centers have tried many promising initiatives in the past and have become wary of 'deploy and depart' engagements with vendors," said Steve Pollock, executive vice president and co-founder of TuVox. "We base our relationships on helping customers achieve business results both in the short term and over the long run. Our history of success in delivering measurable results for our customers allows us to offer this unprecedented guarantee."
The TuVox Guaranteed Success Program is part of the TuVox Success Program(TM) series, and is available immediately for hosted and on-premise speech applications.
