Aer Lingus & United Airlines Partnership Takes to the Skies - Zibb.com
CHICAGO, Oct 08, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
Aer Lingus and United Airlines have begun a codesharing agreement enabling United customers to book connecting flights on Aer Lingus' network for travel from Nov. 1, 2008. The new partnership provides customers with a seamless booking process, coordinated baggage handling, and simplified reservations, ticketing and check-in. From April 2009 Aer Lingus will place its code on United Airlines domestic flights, giving customers access to United's entire North American network.
The codeshare agreement will cover all six of Aer Lingus' U.S. gateways, including New York-JFK, Boston, Orlando, Chicago-O'Hare, San Francisco, and Washington. Aer Lingus customers will have access to nearly 200 additional destinations in the U.S. through United's hubs in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington. United customers will also benefit from greater access to destinations in Ireland and to destinations in the UK and Continental Europe through Aer Lingus' extensive short-haul network.
Dermot Mannion, Aer Lingus CEO said, "The relationship with United Airlines extends our offering to both our Irish and North American customer base, with seamless travel options and access to more than 200 destinations served by United Airlines in the US. We believe that this agreement will strengthen and consolidate our position in the US market as we capitalise on the scale and the strength of the United Airlines network."
The United Airlines flight code is now available on all Aer Lingus transatlantic flights to and from Ireland and on flights between Ireland and both London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
"We are pleased to partner with Aer Lingus and provide our customers in the United States with the most direct service to Ireland on the country's national carrier," says Glenn Tilton, chairman, president and CEO of United. "Our customers will now enjoy more choices and benefits during their travels to Ireland and the rest of Europe."
On November 1, members of the United Airline's Mileage Plus(R) program will be able to earn miles on the codeshare routes and may redeem Mileage Plus miles across the Aer Lingus network. Aer Lingus frequent flyers will be able to earn points on trans-Atlantic flights operated by United and redeem points for travel across the United network. Aer Lingus customers will also be able to earn points on select United domestic flights, beginning in April 2009.

Aer Lingus selects Rockwell Collins to provide avionics suite - Zibb.com
Oct 14, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
Ireland-based airline Aer Lingus has selected Rockwell Collins to provide a comprehensive suite of avionics, including the MultiScan weather radar, the GLU-920 multi-mode receiver and a full range of communication and navigation offerings, for installation on six Airbus A330 aircraft.
The deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2009. According to Rockwell Collins, its WXR-2100 MultiScan hazard detection system is the first and only radar that analyzes and determines actual weather hazards, not just atmospheric moisture content.
MultiScan is a hands-free airborne radar system that is claimed to reduce pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters, and provides optimal clutter-free weather detection from the nose of the aircraft to 320 nautical miles.
Rockwell Collins said that the GLU-920 multi-mode receiver (MMR) is an integrated unit that provides the aircraft's primary position, velocity and time reference and enables precision landing capability. The advanced MMR also offers instrument landing system capability and high-integrity, satellite-based positioning for navigation and future landing functions.
Other Rockwell Collins equipment chosen by Aer Lingus includes the ADF-900 automatic direction finder, DME-900 distance measuring equipment, HFS-900D high frequency system, CPL-920D coupling unit, VHF-920 very high frequency transceiver, GNA-910 global navigation antenna, LRA-900 low-range radio altimeter, RAA-700, VOR-900 VHF omnidirectional radio receiver, and the SAT-906 satellite communications system.

Aer Lingus job cut proposal could drive unions to strike action - Zibb.com
Oct 08, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
Loss-making Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus's board has approved a cost reduction program which includes up to 1,500 job cuts aimed at delivering savings to ensure the airline's long-term viability, potentially infuriating its employee unions to seek strike action.
Irish trade union Siptu has stated that the airline's board has approved a E74 million cost-cutting plan to be implemented beginning December 1, 2008, to reduce around 1,500 ground staff and cabin crew at Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports. The airline will outsource these jobs to third parties.
Aer Lingus will effect these job cuts through voluntary redundancy, early retirement and possible employment with the third parties the airline will outsource the jobs to.
Siptu has launched a member ballot to initiate full-fledged industrial action, while the Impact trade union has decided to hold off a strike ballot pending the airline's negotiations with the Irish Labor Relations Commission. Impact has made it clear that it is opposed to any outsourcing of jobs, even though it is ready to negotiate on cost-cutting measures.
