Wet Seal downgraded to neutral at Credit Suisse - Zibb.com

Shares of Wet Seal Inc. fell Tuesday after the company was downgraded to neutral from outperform at Credit Suisse, which said top-line pressure was likely because the company tops the list of retailers that face sales to square footage comparisons "well above their historical averages."

"Specifically, we estimate Wet Seal will achieve sales per square foot of $324 in 2008. While this doesn't seem high compared to higher price point retailers, for Wet Seal $324 per square foot is 26% higher than the average productivity the company achieved over the last five years ($257)," Credit Suisse wrote. "While the company appears to face an easy same store sales comparison next year, as we estimate same store sales to be down 3.5% in 2008, the productivity comparison will make things more challenging."

The firm added that increasing productivity would be difficult in the current macroeconomic environment. "The concept does not have the luxury of being able to take up prices on selected items and instead must compete with the highly promotional teen retailers such as American Eagle and Aeropostale," it said. "While the value orientation of Wet Seal lends itself to some trade down customers, there is increasing competition for that customer."

Shares of Wet Seal fell 5% to $4.77 in mid-day trading Tuesday. Ryan Vlastelica rv/vj
