Pakistan conference speakers say IMF bailout not to help in long run - Zibb.com
Nov 01, 2008 (BBC Monitoring via COMTEX) --
Peshawar: Economists, traders and industrialists Friday feared that seeking help from the International Monitory Fund (IMF) for the economic bailout of the country would not help in the long-run, adding the present government did not have skilled financial managers to make the economy vibrant.
They expressed these views during 'Save Pakistan Conference' arranged by Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI) here. Addressing the conference, former vice-chancellor, Peshawar University and economist Dr Abdul Mateen said seeking help from the IMF for the economic bailout would not help in the long run.
He said assistance from the IMF had never been conducive for the economy and it never helped in the socio-economic progress of the country, adding that the country needs an immediate bailout, but it should never damage the economy in the long run.
He argued that the financial managers in the former government were the bankers, not the economists, and the present rulers too lack knowledge, skill and commitment. Senator Ilyas Bilour said the country could no more afford the indirect taxes, as the same would have lasting effect on the lives of the poor. He said industries were on the verge of disaster and the traders were suffering a lot due to the wrong policies.
Former NWFP senior minister and Provincial Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Sirajul Haq said corruption is a menace more harmful than terrorism that had shaken the vary foundation of the country. He said the western nations had imposed corrupt system and rulers, which were creating hurdle in the way of development. "Around Rs145 billion corruption is being carried out in Pakistan every year. The only way for prosperous Pakistan is to expel corrupt people," he said, lamenting that among the top 200 universities of the world, Pakistan stands nowhere.
Justice (Retd) Mian Muhammad Ajmal said since the creation of Pakistan, the people had overlooked national development and only carried out individual development, leaving the country far behind from those, which got independence in the same era.
SCCI President Muhammad Asaf, said the country was passing through a critical phase of its history as it has been engulfed by various crises. "Despite these lingering crises, including law and order, inflation, unemployment, devaluation of rupee against dollar, the country would survive as there are people who were sincere and committed to their country," he said adding that the rulers should not look to the IMF for assistance rather they should exploit Pakistan's potential sincerely and steer it out of the crises.
President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Muhammad Ali said in the resent years, the business community paid Rs1,000 billion tax, but its proper utilization was still a question mark. "Everyone is ready to pay tax, but the people are uncertain about its utilization," he added.

Grandparents Day - Sunday, 5th October 2008 - Zibb.com
LONDON, Sep 18, 2008 (PR Newswire Europe via COMTEX) --
Capture the Memories While you can
With all the talk of an ageing population, it can be easy to take for granted that grandparents will be part of your children's lives for years to come. Observing the special bond that exists between grandparents and grandchildren is a wonderful thing for a parent, offering an opportunity to spoil and indulge children in a way that parents could never do. But what if that bond were suddenly broken - what information would survive to keep the memories alive? How much would your children remember of the people they once felt such love for?
In a world where everyone is looking forward all the time - new jobs, bigger houses, better cars, more clothes - it has become ever more important to take some time to look back. Over the years, Grandparents have seen such tremendous change and lived through some momentous times. Someone born in 1945 has seen such events as:
- the end of WWII
- the beginning of Cold War
- the `birth' of Charles Schulz's Peanuts cartoon
- launch of Playboy magazine
- discovery of the helical structure of DNA
- the first organ transplants
- decolonization of Africa
- assassinations of high-profile figures including JFK, Martin
Luther King, John Lennon, Benazir Bhutto and Malcolm X
- marriage and death of Princess Diana
- the first men on the moon
- television moving from black and white, to colour, to five
channels, to satellite, to digital to HD and on demand
- the erection and destruction of the World Trade Center towers
- the end of apartheid in South Africa
- technical advances including mobile phones, home computers, video
and DVD players, cameras and home recording equipment
- 6 Roman Catholic popes, 11 US Presidents and 17 UK Prime Ministers
- 25,000,000 killed as a result of wars
- 128,000,000 noncombatant deaths, i.e. those caused by the
Holocaust, genocide in Rwanda etc
- 1,821 deaths resulting from the Northern Ireland `Troubles'
- 63 Academy Award ceremonies
- music bands from Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles to Take That and
The Spice Girls
But do you know what those events meant to the people closest to you? And what about events in their own lives - do you really know what their life has been like, what activities they have or have not enjoyed, what their family means to them? What would it mean to have a permanent reminder of your parents' lives to keep their memory alive for years to come?
This can all be easily achieved by completing a 'Grandparents' Memories' book which features over 200 prompt questions to ensure that no topic is overlooked. The books are simple to complete yet would form a crucial part of your family's history, something which could never be regained once those people are gone. Answering the questions not only gives you an insight into a life you may not know fully about, but also creates an opportunity to actually sit down and talk together, and also to keep a hand-written memory for the future for you, your children and their children for years to come. The specially crafted questions delve into aspects of your life which you might not have thought would be of interest to your family; some grandchildren believe that their grandparents were born old and could never have undertaken fantastic and fascinating events. These are the stories which will be brought out by using a 'Memories' book and which will provide endless topics of conversation and opportunities to reminisce. It can even be kept safe in the `New Grandparents' Memories box', featuring no fewer than three personalisable items.
Don't leave it too late - make a commitment to complete a 'Memories' book and create a personal, family record which will be treasured for years to come. 'Memories' books are available from http://www.myfamilystories.co.uk priced from GBP10.99.

- Grandparents Day is an Age Concern initiative. Together Age Concern and the Government are calling on the public to recognise the role of grandparents in families and communities across the country.
Gordon Lishman, Director General of Age Concern, said:
"Grandparents are role models, friends and carers who contribute so much to families and communities across the country. Grandparents' Day is everybody's chance to say thank you for the difference they make. My challenge to the retail sector is to establish this day as firmly with the British public as Mothers' and Fathers' Day."
Pensions Minister Mike O'Brien added:
"We can all take those closest to us for granted. On Grandparents' Day I want people to stop and think about older people especially grandmothers and grandfathers. Think about what they have done for you. The number of older people is growing and we should recognise and celebrate their contribution. Grandparents' Day is a great chance for us all to show our appreciation."

Fascinating True Tales From a Prisoner of Peace -- New Book is a Journal of a German Soldier's
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., Oct 13, 2008 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --
Author Hans Gussmann was a German soldier, drafted into the German Army without any political attachments, merely doing his duty for his country. He was interned by the Allies for nearly three years after the end of World War II. The tale of prisoners held by the Russians is well known, but the prisoners held by the Allies have been forgotten. Discover the virtually untold story of what occurred in those prison labor camps after the war as seen through the eyes of a Prisoner of Peace.
Based on the contents of the author's prison notebooks and memoirs, Prisoner of Peace tells the true account of what happened in those labor camps after the war. This is not about the battles of combat, but the struggles of everyday survival as a German POW in the Allies camp. Through Gussmann's eyes, you'll get a glimpse of a world of endurance, hardship, and sacrifice that non-Nazi German soldiers paid for because of horrendous crimes committed on Hitler's orders. Spiced with humor, you will be riveted by the fascinating tales of this Prisoner of Peace. Order a copy now!
About the Author
Hans Gussmann was a student at the Wiesen Grammar School located in the Wiesenstrasse. At age fifteen, he attended a machinist trade school where he learned the tool and die trade. He made his apprenticeship and then was drafted into the military where he became an ammunition and demolition expert. Wernher von Braun was one of his teachers when he was sent to Berlin for more training while recovering from a war injury. Gussmann was also very active in sports, including racing bicycles and playing soccer, and he played musical instruments and sang.
