Russia invites Cuba to join GLONASS global navigation system - minister - Zibb.com

Havana, Oct 31, 2008 (BBC Monitoring via COMTEX) --

Russia is inviting Cuba to join the GLONASS global [satellite-based navigation] system, [Russian] Minister of Telecommunications and Mass Communications Igor Shchegolev, who is on a working visit to Havana, has said.

"This system allows for solving many tasks of national economy in any country," the minister told a news conference organized by RIA Novosti in the Cuban capital. "We invite all countries that would be interested to join this system. Naturally, we have offered the same to Cuba," the minister said at the news conference.

According to him, Cuba will be furnished with all necessary information related to the programme.

"If the Cuban side perceives new opportunities (of GLONASS operation) then we are ready for cooperation," the minister continued. [Passage omitted]

"GLONASS is a truly global system, which Russia is developing not only for itself but also for other countries," he said. [Passage omitted]

"It (the GLONASS system) is to a considerable degree operational over Russia, and we expect that by the end of next year there will be 24 satellites in orbit, which will ensure its full operational capability on a global scale," he said.
