Northrop Grumman's MQ-8B Fire Scout Vertical Unmanned Air System Demonstrates Multi-Mode Maritime

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has demonstrated radar capability on its company-owned MQ-8B Fire Scout Vertical Unmanned Air System (VUAS) designated as "P6." The flight demonstrated Fire Scout's ability to search for, detect, and track multiple targets during a test surveillance mission. The demonstration was part of an on-going effort to expand upon the development capabilities of the MQ-8B Fire Scout. The flight took place on Sept. 19 at the Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz. test center.

"Demonstrating a maritime radar capability on Fire Scout has been one of our most important goals. Fire Scout with radar is an invaluable tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform for all air capable surface ships supporting littoral and blue water missions," said Doug Fronius, tactical unmanned systems director for Northrop Grumman's Integrated Systems sector.

The demonstration took place using a non-developmental Telephonics RDR-1700B search, surveillance, tracking and imaging radar system. The flight was the first of several radar demonstrations that will include an over-water search trial.

Fire Scout's adaptable open architecture -- designed, tested and integrated in the laboratories of Northrop Grumman's Unmanned Systems Development Center in San Diego -- proved successful as P6 conducted its first operational test flight in August. Fire Scout demonstrations will continue with a variety of payloads such as a second electro-optical/infrared payload and various U.S. Army payloads. The flights are commanded from a Tactical Control Station (TCS) with software produced by Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems in Falls Church, Va.

Northrop Grumman's MQ-8B Fire Scout will provide unprecedented situational awareness and precision targeting support for future U.S. armed forces. Fire Scout can find tactical targets, track and designate targets, accurately provide targeting data to strike platforms and perform battle damage assessment. With vehicle endurance greater than eight hours, Fire Scout will be capable of continuous operations providing coverage 110 nautical miles from any launch site.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.

Photo Release -- Northrop Grumman's Company-Owned MQ-8B Fire Scout Vertical Unmanned Air System

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) prepares to move forward with selective demonstrations after conducting the first flight of its company-owned MQ-8B Fire Scout Vertical Unmanned Air System (VUAS) designated as "P6." The flight was conducted at the Webster Field Annex portion of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. P6 is part an on-going effort to expand upon the development capabilities of the MQ-8B Fire Scout.

A photo accompanying this release is available at http://media.primezone.com/noc/

"The first flight of P6 is a significant milestone showing that the company-owned MQ-8B Fire Scout is ready to support system demonstrations with a variety of payloads. We look forward to the opportunity to use our modular mission payload architecture to accelerate the integration and evaluation of payloads while performing mission demonstrations," said Rick Crooks, Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems P6 program manager.

Near-term plans include integration and flights with a maritime radar, a second electro-optical/infrared payload and various U.S. Army payloads. The P6 demonstration program will follow rigorous systems engineering processes to ensure success. Payload integration for all demonstrations will take place at Northrop Grumman's Unmanned Systems Development Center in San Diego. Demonstration flights will continue at Webster Field, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., and at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz.

The 20-minute first flight of P6 followed Fire Scout's routine Fully Autonomous Functional Flight (FAFF) mission plan of vehicle start, takeoff, flight, landing and shutdown. Upon command, the vehicle launched and proceeded to hover at the first pre-designated waypoint. The vehicle transitioned to forward flight, climbed out and moved through a series of waypoints. After capturing the final waypoint, the vehicle descended to a preprogrammed hover/hold position. Following the land command, the vehicle landed on the designated touchdown point. The successful mission concluded with an autonomous shutdown.

The flight was commanded from a Tactical Control Station (TCS) with software produced by Raytheon Systems Corporation in Falls Church, Va. Other key Fire Scout industry team members and contributors include: Cubic Defense Applications, FLIR Systems, Inc., GE Fanuc, GE Aviation, Kearfott Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Rockwell Collins, Kell-Strom, Crater Industries, Swift Engineering, Red Barn Machine, Rolls-Royce Corporation, Sierra Nevada Corporation and Schweizer Aircraft Corporation.

Northrop Grumman's MQ-8B Fire Scout will provide unprecedented situational awareness and precision targeting support for Armed Forces of the future. Fire Scout can find tactical targets, track and designate targets, accurately provide targeting data to strike platforms and perform battle damage assessment. With vehicle endurance greater than eight hours, Fire Scout will be capable of continuous operations, providing coverage 110 nautical miles from any launch site.

Cavotec Successfully Trials Groundbreaking Pre-Conditioned Air System with Airbus - Zibb.com

Airport equipment innovator, Cavotec MSL (OTCBB:CVMLF), has completed a two-week series of intensive trials of its patented PCAir aircraft cooling system, with leading aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, at the group's production plant in Toulouse, France.

"It is extremely difficult to cool aircraft on the ground using conventional systems, as the inlet temperature needs to be at least minus five degrees Celsius," says Ottonel Popesco, Cavotec CEO.

"The Cavotec PCAir System is unlike any other air-based technology on the market, expanding dry compressed air to produce 100 cubic metres of pre-conditioned air per minute, at minus 25 degrees Celsius," adds Popesco.

Pilots tend to run on board auxiliary power units (APUs) to cool parked aircraft, as conventional systems are often ineffective. APUs can burn between 200 and 600 litres of fuel per hour, generating pollution at airports and consuming costly fuel that could be used to fly aircraft -- not cool them on the ground. Cavotec's PCAir system provides the dual benefits of reducing pollution and reducing costs. This makes the PCAir system beneficial to all airport constituencies: airlines, airport operators, and communities surrounding airports. The culmination of in-house testing and the two-week trials at Airbus proved that the Cavotec PCAir systems operates effectively, having successfully delivered --25a^C 'dry air' in environments with ambient temperatures of up to 48a^C. Most importantly, the PCAir system cooled Airbus' largest wide body aircraft, the A380, in less than 30 minutes, proving the system's adaptability for the entire Airbus fleet.

Cavotec has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Airbus, supplying in-ground supply systems for production hangars and delivery positions, including those for the A380 programme. Earlier this year, Cavotec won an order to supply 12 in-ground utility systems for the new Airbus A320 Final Assembly Line in Tianjin, China. In addition, Cavotec has supplied delivered in-ground supply systems for the Airbus A400M production hangars in Seville, Spain, and produces a full range of tow bars for all Airbus aircraft types.

The PCAir System is scheduled to go on sale during the second half of 2009.

Cavotec is a global leader in innovative and environmentally friendly engineering solutions, supplying fully integrated systems to the maritime, airport, mining, and general industry sectors throughout the world.
