The former head of state, who says he may run for president again in 2010, has consistently denied the charges.

Calderon joined seven other defendants in the dock Monday on the first day of their trial for allegedly diverting some of the $39.5 million the CCSS borrowed from the Finnish government to finance the purchase of medical equipment from a firm in the Nordic country.

Prosecutors claim that $520,000 of that money ended up in the Panamanian bank account of a company owned by Calderon, who says the sum represents legal fees for his work putting together the loan transaction.

The prosecution says that roughly $8 million of the loan was siphoned off in "commissions" for Calderon, other politicians and public officials, including then-CSSS chief Eliseo Vargas.
