UPDATE 1-UK's Aggreko to exceed expectations, H1 profits up - Zibb.com

British temporary power provider Aggreko Plc said pretax profit grew 43 percent in the first half and it expected strong emerging market demand would help it exceed market expectations for full-year profits.

Aggreko, which rents generators, air conditioners, air compressors and cooling towers to corporate clients, is benefiting from demand in Asian, African and central American markets which require energy to help power infrastructure projects.

"It's a tale of two worlds," Chief Executive Rupert Soames said in a telephone interview. "North America and Europe are growing at single digits in terms of revenues, but the rest of the world (is) ... growing very quickly."

Aggreko's half-year pretax profit rose to 67.9 million pounds ($125.6 million) on revenue of 408 million pounds. It had been expected to earn 68 million pounds on revenue of 400 million.

Aggreko, whose shares are up 40 percent in the past year, is expected to earn pretax profit of 157.7 million pounds in 2008, Reuters Estimates show.

Evolution Securities said it would upgrade its 750 pence target price and bring forward by a year its pretax profit expectations of 172 million pounds.

The equipment hire group has "relentlessly rising forecasts," the broker said. "Forex will help too. (Aggreko is an) astonishing performer."

Aggreko also hiked its interim dividend by 25 percent to 3.80 pence a share.

EMERGING MARKET GROWTH

Sales in mature markets in North America and Europe, which account for roughly 58 percent of 2008 revenue, are slowing to single-digit growth, Soames said.

But its markets in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Central and South America are growing "very quickly," he added.

"The structural imbalance between global demand for, and the supply of, power continues to drive our business, and we are investing heavily in new fleets and expanding our reach, to meet strong demand in emerging markets," Soames said in a statement.

"The momentum we have developed in the (emerging markets) will more than offset softer demand in North America and Europe and will enable us to deliver another very strong performance in the second half."

Full-year capital expenditure will amount to about 265 million pounds, a rate of spending faster than originally envisaged, to meet strong demand in emerging markets.

In March, Aggreko said it expected to spend 1 billion pounds on capex in the five years to 2012.

Debt-to-asset levels stand at 88 percent and interest cover is at 11.8 times, levels Soames said he is comfortable with.

Aggreko shares rose 1.6 percent to 723 pence at 0714 GMT, after earlier falling to an intraday low of 705p. The stock has risen 40 percent in the last 12 months, giving it a price-earnings ratio of 24 times, twice the sector average.

PRESS DIGEST - Financial Times - Sept 3 - Zibb.com

- Financial Times

RECESSION ALERT HITS BROWN RELAUNCH

Gordon Brown announced a 1.6 billion pound package of measures aimed at reviving the housing market on Tuesday, but the move was eclipsed by claims that the UK economy is heading towards recession. Brown argued that the measures, which include a one-year stamp duty holiday, would help the British economy survive the global downturn. However his claim was challenged by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation Development's assertion that the UK would be the only major world economy to enter recession this year. Meanwhile, Downing Street admitted it could not yet say how the scheme would be funded.

FASTEST DECLINE IN JOB VACANCIES FOR SEVEN YEARS

A study by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG has found that demand for staff in August fell at the fastest rate for almost seven years. According to official figures for August, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has climbed in each of the previous six months to reach its fastest rate since 1992. The total number of unemployed people rose by 60,000 to reach 1.67 million in the three months to June 30th. Although the numbers are low in historical terms, they are expected to rise in the coming months as the impact of job losses in the financial and building sectors filters through to other parts of the economy.

FOCUS ON GREEN OFFICES WANES

Research by property consultancy Knight Frank has found that environmental concerns have taken a back seat at UK companies as costs become more of an issue amid increasingly difficult economic conditions. Rental cost is now the key factor to be considered when taking office space in central London, with retention of key staff the next most important concern. Green issues such as energy efficiency are identified as the least important consideration, suggesting that such matters are more of a concern in benign economic conditions.

LONMIN BOOSTS DEFENCE AGAINST XSTRATA

Lonmin has accepted that "significant synergies" could result from combining its operations with Xstrata , which is staging a hostile five billion pound takeover of the platinum miner. Lonmin has stressed that it would only consider talking to Xstrata about a deal if it improves its 33 pounds-a-share offer. On Tuesday, Lonmin released documents claiming that the proposed cash offer undervalued its South African platinum mining operations. Lonmin said that its enterprise value had been trading at an average of 10.5 times earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, implying a standalone value of 32 pounds-a-share before the addition of any takeover premium.

GROUPS MAKE JOINT BID FOR INFORMA

Blackstone is to make a joint bid alongside rivals Providence Equity Partners and the Carlyle Group [CYL.UL] for Informa in a deal that could represent the largest private equity buyout since the start of the credit crunch. The consortium is close to securing bank financing for the acquisition, which has been difficult to obtain due to the poor state of debt markets. A JP Morgan-led syndicate of 14 banks that includes Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland has agreed to provide the majority of the debt with an offer to lend between five and six times Informa's Ebitda.

ASHTEAD CAUTIOUS ABOUT MARKETS

Equipment hire group Ashtead has attributed its stronger-than-expected first quarter results to improved operational performance, but advised against raising full-year profit estimates in current market conditions. The company let rental prices of its machinery drop in the US and the UK in an effort to sustain high rates of utilisation. Ashtead also reduced its capital expenditure and sold off one of its units in order to accelerate the repayment of its debts. The company posted revenues of 256 million pounds and pretax profits of 25.2 million pounds in three months to the end of July.

RECIVA SENDS SIGNALS TO INTERNET RADIO

Digital radio software company Reciva has appointed Phil Riley, former chief executive of Chrysalis, as its new chairman. Riley said his appointment signalled the beginning of rapid growth for Reciva in the domain of internet radio, with the potential for tens of millions of unit sales within five years. Chief executive Ben Terrell remarked: "The internet has flattened the world for ever, and that is where we are trying to go." Reciva has just completed a fund raising round with angel investors and Riley said he would soon be visiting venture capitalists.

QINETIQ SET TO WIN MoD DEAL

Defence research group Qinetiq is expected to announce on Wednesday that it has won a 15-year contract from the Ministry of Defence to secure ship and submarine testing facilities in the UK. Under the 150 million pound Maritime Strategic Capabilities agreement, the MoD and Qinetiq will commit to invest in facilities that include an ocean basin at Gosport that is used to test the manoeuvrability of scale models in various sea conditions. The deal is in line with the government's Defence Industrial Strategy, which promotes long-term partnerships between the MoD and industry.

IQE EYES GROWTH ON WAFER DEMAND

IQE , a supplier of wafers to the semiconductor industry, claims it is set for rapid growth due to rising demand for third generation mobile phones. The group specialises in gallium arsenide wafers, which are faster and more efficient than the silicon variety and are vital in wireless devices. Chief executive Drew Nelson explained that the drive for higher performance mobile gadgets was responsible for the rise in demand for its wafers: "We remain on course to deliver strong growth in sales and profits for the full-year." The company's sales rose 27 percent to 30.2 million pounds on the back of demand from wireless chip companies. Net debt climbed to 15.7 million pounds.

BROOKS TO LEAVE FINSBURY FOOD

Dave Brooks, chief executive of Finsbury Food , has decided to quit the business he built up over 11 years. He will be replaced by Martin Lightbody, who last year sold his cakes group to Finsbury for 37.5 million pounds when he and his family took a 26.6 percent stake in the company. Lightbody joined the Finsbury board following the takeover in February 2007. The board will also welcome John Duffy, who will be chief operating officer. Brooks explained that he planned to seek new career opportunities, but will remain until the end of September and remain a consultant until March 2009.
