The centre will facilitate teacher training especially in the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Internet Mediated Language (IML). It will also enable the teachers to the use latest tools of computer and internet in language classrooms and help the teachers and researchers update their knowledge about the latest trends in language learning and teaching.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naqvi said that this Centre would prove to be a role model for other universities to follow. He said that it has been realized at HEC that English language is an issue in the higher education sectors.

We have been giving special attention to improve the level of English Language teaching in the universities and for this purpose special courses have been devised for training of English, he added.

Dr. Butt thanked the HEC for selecting AIOU for this model Centre and expressed full confidence in the Universitys English Department to run this Centre.

Dr. Hafeez also expressed his gratitude and ensured that this Centre would be a model Centre for other Universities to follow.

He added that the Department of English has already taken initiative by offering online courses for English Language teachers.

He also thanked SAC committee members for their commitment to make this project a success.

Ms Malik briefed the audience about the English Language Teachers Reform (ELTR) project under which the Self Access Centre is being established.

While highlighting the advancement of the project, she said that it has imparted training to more than 1350 teachers. She explained the need to establish SAC at AIOU and pointed out that the University is striving hard to strengthen use modern technology in language learning.

Umar Farooq, Chairman, CALL subcommittee presented a report of the committee and briefed that besides establishment of SAC, the committee has conducted six HEC certified courses at different cities, conducted one-day national seminar on ICT in ELT and designed a webpage on HEC template which contains language learning and teacher training modules.

He explained that the SAC would work to create a future in which committees of teachers, faculty, programs, and institution collectively advance teaching and learning by exchanging their educational knowledge, experiences, ideas, and reflections by taking advantage of various technology and resources.

A web based lab affiliated with the SAC would be created maintained as a resource for other universities and educational institutional interested in maintain such labs.

He said that this Centre Would be hub of CALL activities and would offer teachers training programmes and online courses for English Language teachers.

Rahmatpur police arrested Bashir Khuhro and Fatah Tunio, while Market police arrested Muhammad Shrif Jatoi. Accused Asghar Birohi was arrested by Baqrani police.

In yet another raid, Walid police e arrested Ali Madad, Ghulam Abbas, Anwar Ali, Lal Khan and Munawar Shar.

The residents of the twin cities are donating what ever they can to several welfare organizations that have set up large number of relief camps at many places in the twin cities like Abpare Market, Murree Road, Raja Bazzar, Islamabad Subzimandi to help the affectees.

Many political parties like Tehrik-e-Insaf, PukhtoonKha Milli Awami Party and Jamaat-e-Islami, are also actively collecting the donations in their relief camps.

Dr Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Executive Member of Pakistan Islamic Medical Association, told TheNation that there was dire need of donations to speed up the relief operations as the winter in Balochistan has set-in. The quake-prone areas are about to witness extreme cold weather and people need immediate support. The quake affectees desperately need tents, blankets, warm clothes, medicine, dry food, milk, water and other necessities of daily life because relief operation, reconstruction and rehabilitation process will definitely take time and money, he maintained.

The devastating quake claimed more than 300 precious lives besides leaving thousands of people homeless. In this chilly weather ,these people are forced to live under open sky as, a chain of after shocks has increased the fear manifold.

To overcome the crisis, many governmental and non-governmental organizations are actively working in the areas. People across the county are donating for their grieved sisters and brothers of Balochistan. The crisis can only be overcome by donating generously valuables, cash and huge numbers of blankets and warm clothes.

Tahir Khan, President Al-Khidmat Foundation sitting in a relief camp set up by his organization at Benazir Bhautto Shaheed Road while requesting to the people said, Your contributions can make a lot of difference. Please come forward and help for the welfare of humanity.

Aslam Khan, another volunteer at Abpara Market working with PukhtoonKha Mili Awami Party, remarked Our little help can reduce the miseries of these affected people adding, We should have bow down our heads before Allah Almighty and prepare ourselves to help the quake affectees at this crucial time.

It is pertinent to mention here that Aaema kram are also making announcement regarding help for the affectees in their respective Mosques and people are also donating what ever they can in these mosques. I have announced in the Masjid after offering Jumma prayer donation for the Balochistan affectees, which resulted in a huge amount of cash and valuable collected by the Khadim of the Mosque, said Hafiz Ikram Ul Haq Arbi. He said that a team of his Madrassa would soon visit to the quake-hit areas for relief work and there they will distribute the donations among the quack affectees.

Once again natural disaster has evoked humanity.

The recent disastrous earthquake in Balochistan has made us realize that these catastrophes cannot be controlled by artificial means. It is being hoped that with the great concern and affection of the people across the county towards the grieved residents of the Balochistan would help to reduce the miniseries of these people.
