National Archives Honored by White House for Saving Energy - Zibb.com

Receives 2008 Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management

The National Archives has received the 2008 Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management for its support, leadership, and efforts in promoting and improving energy use in National Archives facilities and operations nationwide. The National Archives was one of only four government agencies to receive this award. The other recipients were the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Marine Corps, and the General Services Administration.

The National Archives developed an agency-wide energy management plan that formalized policy, procedures, and responsibilities for energy management. For example, the National Archives at College Park has used an energy savings performance contract to upgrade lighting and the mechanical and energy management control systems. Last year the Clinton Presidential Library was designated one of the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly places to work in the United States by the U.S. Green Buildings Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-EB) Green Building program. The Clinton Library was the first existing federal building to attain the "platinum" award status.

In the last two fiscal years, the National Archives invested more than $7.5 million in energy efficiency projects. As a result, the agency reduced energy intensity by more than 6 percent from FY 2006 and almost 19 percent from the 2003 baseline, representing combined savings of 114 billion Btu and more than $2 million in energy costs altogether.

"I am delighted that the President has recognized the ongoing work by the National Archives to save energy and reduce the agency's carbon footprint," said Archivist Allen Weinstein. "Energy efficiency is a priority for this agency, and we will continue to work to reduce energy use at our facilities nationwide," he added.

Country National Archives And Records Services Opens Private Archives - Zibb.com

The Botswana National Archives and Records Services, a Department under the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture will officially open the Private Archives Collection today, Gladys Kokorwe will officiate.

The event will be held at the National Archives and Records Services building near parliament.

The theme of the event is "Private Archives: Towards a Strategic Partnership in the Preservation of the National Documentary Heritage".

This theme was chosen to reflect the deliberate effort made by the department in partnering with different stakeholders in raising awareness on the importance of acquiring, preserving and accessing our national documentary heritage.

Initially the National Archives Act of 1978 only made provision for the management of Public Archives. However the department has been proactive in requesting private archives and has to date made progress in acquiring collections from different stakeholders including missionaries, churches, associations, imminent persons and politicians.

The programme of acquiring Private Archives has been given further impetus by the passing of the Amendment Act of October 2007 that expanded the definition of archives to include private Archives.

The progress made also reflects the constant interest and strong support rendered by the Government in the realization of a balanced approach in the preservation of the nation's cultural heritage.

By diversifying our national documentary heritage the Botswana National Archives and Records Services enables greater access to information, appeal to a wider audience and increased use of archives.

It is hoped that the collection will be of interest to the public for research and leisure reading.

The programme will remain sustainable from continued support by way of donations to the department from private individuals and private organisations.

This will ensure that as a nation we collectively pass our documented experiences to the present and future generations.

The Botswana National Archives and Records Services will continue to take constructive steps to collect, preserve and make the collection accessible to the general public in order to achieve the national Vision 2016 pillars of "An Educated, Informed Nation," and "A United and Proud Nation" over its unique documented heritage.
