Both the teams had shared six points in two matches of the last edition. NBP finished fifth with 43 points while KESC had managed 32 points in order to get eighth spot.

It was a defence-oriented game throughout and the ball was mostly confined to midfield. The two outfits, who knew the stronger and weaker elements of each other, came out from their shells as the ball went into the cage three times.

KESC midfielder Ahmed Lal breaks the deadlock of 90-minute tussle in the 31st minute when he capitalised on the ball from the middle to do the rest. But NBP's coaches Nasir Ismail and Zahid Taj had a sigh of relief when international midfielder Abbas Ali drew level within five minutes. His shot seemed on course to fly high over the bar but the ball dipped dramatically at the last minute and deceived KESC keeper. It was 1-1 at interval.

The second half action showed little variation on the pattern of play with two well-matched teams effectively cancelling each other out. Abdul Aziz-led NBP, the winner of 1993 National Football Challenge Cup, dominated the second session with several inroads but KESC keeper Muhammad Omar and back four were equal to the task.

Akbar Ali-led KESC, who were dangerous on breakaways, steered the winner in the 87th minutes through front-runner Aurangzeb whose right-footed drive left keeper Amir Gul bemused. Two-times SAF Games Gold medallist Aziz nearly levelled the tie within few seconds from the end from a long-range effort that seemed certain to find the top corner until the keeper Omar kept it out.
